University Day at UNT
Students from different countries wear their native dress and carry their native flags in the annual Flag Parade as part of University Day -- a campus-wide celebration of our evolution from a college to a university.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

As a public research university growing in national prominence, UNT is making significant investments in research in areas that capitalize on our strengths such as bio-based products, logistics and materials science research -- all hot economic drivers for the state and nation. Our efforts haven't gone unnoticed.

President Smatresk

UNT was recently ranked nationally in the Chronicle of Higher Education among research universities with the greatest percentage increases in science and engineering research spending -- or expenditures -- over a 10-year period. As noted by the Chronicle, UNT experienced dramatic percentage increases in both total research spending and federal research dollars spent from FY 2004 to FY 2013.

UNT's cybersecurity program also continues to stand out among the best in the nation. This spring, the National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security named UNT a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research. It's an honor to be among one of about 60 such designated research centers in the U.S. and one of only a few Texas universities that's also a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. We're also the only institution in the U.S. to receive National Science Foundation funding for a Scholarship for Service program exclusive to doctoral students studying cybersecurity, which is recognition of the program's excellence.

These designations are not only great bragging rights for UNT, they are an indication of the high-quality research on our campus.

UNT proud,

TAMS students earn Goldwater honors

Congrats to our 2015 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship winner Vishnu Dantu and the three students who received honorable mentions, Anushree Agrawal, Michael Hashe and Tiffany Jiang. They are all students in UNT's Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science and budding young researchers. As one of 10 Goldwater Scholars from Texas, Vishnu was recognized for creating a smartphone application that offers a convenient, painless and cost-effective way for people with diabetes to measure their blood glucose levels. In all, UNT has had 55 Goldwater Scholars.

Jalie Mitchell
Star player returns to Super Pit as coach

If you follow me on Twitter @UNTPrez or attend athletic events, you'll see that I'm a big supporter of Mean Green athletics. This fan could not be more excited to see 2007 North Texas Hall of Famer Jalie Mitchell return to the Mean Green Nation as the new head coach for women's basketball. Her No. 44 jersey is one of only two numbers retired by the Mean Green women's basketball program. I'm also full of green pride for North Texas Cheer, who had a strong finish at the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship finals in Daytona Beach, Fla.

UNT milestones
UNT President Neal Smatresk with the 1962 time capsule.
Unearthing our past

It was a tough job but I helped unearth time capsules that were buried on campus in the spring of 1962 (the end of our first year as a university) and 1988 (the year we became UNT). As intended, the capsules were opened on University Day 2015, the year of our 125th anniversary. See the capsules' contents. After a great University Day 2015, I joined a group of about 30 alumni and UNT supporters for a tour of our new Union under construction. These all made for great reminders of how far we've come as a university.

Lesli Robertson
Weaving research and mentorship
UNT faculty members such as Lesli Robertson, a lecturer in studio arts, help to bring out the creative spark in UNT and our students. Ms. Robertson recently led workshops exploring new weaving patterns based on traditional patterns found in Bedouin culture as a Fulbright Specialist in Kuwait and as a College of Visual Arts and Design faculty member who teaches advanced weaving students. See how her work is helping women in Kuwait and UNT students explore their own creativity.

Jesús Moroles
Alumni art in public spaces

I enjoy learning firsthand from alumni about how they're making an impact in the world. I had the honor of taking a granite sculpting class from National Medal of Arts winner Jesús Moroles and experienced the hard work and talent it takes to perfect this art form. Mr. Moroles is an amazing teacher and a proud alumnus and his acclaimed public art pieces are on display around the world. Read about his artistry and about other alumni who are making news with their art in public spaces in the latest issue of The North Texan online.

President Smatresk with the Ticket crew, George Dunham, Craig Miller and Gordon Keith.
Live on The Ticket

On a live campus broadcast of The Musers on sports radio 1310 The Ticket, I announced alumnus and Ticket personality George Dunham will receive UNT's Presidential Medal of Honor at spring commencement. His fellow alum and talk show host Craig Miller was inducted into the "Intramural Hall of Fame." Their talk show sidekick Gordon Keith was presented with an "Honorary Doctorate of Gentle Musings.” It was an honor to recognize these radio greats, especially Mr. Dunham, who retired this spring as the voice of Mean Green Athletics after more than 21 years. Learn about the new voice of Mean Green Athletics, two-time Emmy Award winner and alumnus Dave Barnett.
