Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

At UNT, we have our own point of view, which makes us one of a kind, as you'll see in our new video, Soar to New Heights at UNT. This video showcases how we're a top-tier research university, distinguished in every way.

We're off to a great start this school year, with strong enrollment, increased investment in academics and the start of a new chapter in athletics. I met with students on the first class day, and the energy and excitement for the new school year is palpable. Watch highlights from the first class day.

We're focused on driving change through collaboration and innovation to increase focus on our goal to help our students succeed, graduate and build strong careers. You can read about the priorities and plans we developed in our annual planning workshop. One team, united by purpose! I will unveil our top priorities for the year at my annual State of the University address at 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. I hope you can join us.

We also have a promising football season ahead of us with our new head football coach, Seth Littrell, and our new athletic director, Wren Baker, on board. They are both passionate about athletics and bring great experience in building a winning program. Join us for the Mean Green football season opener Sept. 3 against SMU at Apogee and for all of our home games. New era. New season. New opportunities! We also celebrate Family Weekend on Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and Homecoming Week is Oct. 31-Nov. 5. We would love to have you back on campus for all of these events.

This will be a great year for us as we build on a legacy more than 125 years in the making.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

How skimping on Zs can affect your health

Undergraduate researchers in UNT's Insomnia Research Laboratory did a study funded by the National Institutes of Health that shows that students who voluntarily slept fewer hours over a week's time had higher serum glucose levels than other college students, putting them at risk for possible medical problems.
