Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

We're enjoying the final weeks of summer and getting excited for the fall semester to start Aug. 29. Freshmen will soon move into the residence halls and experience First Flight Week, which builds upon what they learned during Orientation and sets them up for a successful UNT experience.

Though workforce entry feels far away for our newest students, we're taking steps now to prepare them for professional success following graduation day. Through our new Career Readiness First Year Seminar, we are helping students explore different career options, cultivate professional communication skills, craft a resume, learn about developing their professional brand, and participate in networking and relationship building opportunities. We want to help them gain an understanding of how to translate their college experience into success in their careers.

Our students also are meeting with our Career Coaches to better understand career opportunities and the skills needed for success in their fields of interest. As they progress through their degree plan, UNT is committed to helping students secure practical experiences like internships, externships, volunteer work, leadership, research posts, and other similar activities that will greatly enhance their entry into the job market.

Through the UNT Career Center and other career readiness opportunities, we will help our students develop the critical skills needed to join our successful alumni in the workforce.

UNT Proud,

Spotlight on Excellence
UNT is rooted in jazz music

UNT students will have an opportunity to work with a newly launched music format this fall at KNTU — the university-owned radio station. To garner greater student participation and listenership for the traditional, terrestrial radio station, which is 88.1FM, the Department of Media Arts program recently moved from a jazz format to independent alternative. However, given the emphasis UNT continues to place on jazz, there's now an opportunity for more listeners to hear the station's jazz selection around the clock on KNTU.com. Also, once the station completes technological transmitter upgrades, jazz will return to the airwaves on 88.1 HD2. UNT has been committed to jazz since 1946 and the College of Music will celebrate 75 Years of North Texas Jazz Oct. 20-22 by welcoming alumni and faculty home for a reunion. As the first university to offer a degree in jazz studies, UNT takes pride in continuing its legacy of helping talented musicians launch their careers.

Winning gold and admission to UNT

WFAA talked with incoming UNT ELEVAR student Pilar Rivera, who won gold medals in the vault and balance beam events and silver medals in the gymnastics all-around and uneven bars events at the Special Olympics USA in June. "Hard and hard, I have worked on gymnastics," she said. "If you still lose, you're always going to be proud of yourself no matter what." UNT ELEVAR, a four-year inclusive postsecondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities, accepted Pilar in its second cohort. Pilar said the opportunity to attend college and study at UNT is her dream come true.

Countdown to Mean Green football

We're less than a month until kickoff for Mean Green gamedays at Apogee Stadium. We offer ticket options for every degree of football fans, with six game season tickets, two, three, or four-game mini plans enabling you to pick which games to attend at a discounted rate compared to single games, and single game tickets starting at just $20. Home games include DFW rival SMU (Sept. 3) and Texas Southern (Sept. 10) in non-conference action and Florida Atlantic (Oct. 1), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 15), Homecoming against FIU (Nov. 5), and Rice (Nov. 26) in Conference USA games. Get your tickets now and plan to join us for an action-packed Saturday at Apogee.

Three-day Jeopardy! winner

Music education alumna Emily Fiasco ('12) became a three-day Jeopardy winner last month. An assistant band director in the St. Louis area, she won more than $87,000 in the episodes airing July 13-15. Now a trip to Australia may be in her family's future — because who doesn't love Bluey? Emily's pictured on the right, with Mayim Bialik on the set.
