Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

Creativity is alive in everything we do, whether it's musical and artistic excellence or thought-provoking education, research and scholarship.

President Smatresk, with UNT cheerleaders, Scrappy and UNT band.

You just have to look around our campus -- and in the news -- to discover the inspiration and aspiration in our students and faculty. Or you can drop in on a UNT Symphonic Band rehearsal like I did to hear the musical genius of some amazingly talented students. I even got to do some conducting (left).

Our students exude creativity in academics too. Lily Liu, a second-year student in TAMS, is a 2015 Intel Science Talent Search finalist, one of only 40 in the nation. TAMS student Aditya Vaidya is another great example of UNT creativity at work. Aditya is a budding researcher and a talented violinist who is performing at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Our faculty also do their part to keep the wheel of innovation turning at UNT with cutting-edge inventions and research. For instance, associate professor of chemistry Guido Verbeck's patented nanomanipulator can examine cancer cells at the nano level to find better treatments or identify the tiniest trace of human DNA to help our military and government solve crimes. This kind of creative spark also is why UNT is one of the nation's top producers of U.S. Fulbright Scholars.

I'm proud of the originality and creativity that UNT unleashes in our students and faculty. It's why more students are choosing our university and why more are on track to timely graduation.

UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk

Sharing my perspective and priorities

Since my first day at UNT, I've strived to be an open and candid president, whether I'm on campus, in the community or talking with media. I recently sat down for a Q&A with our student newspaper the North Texas Daily and I visited with the Dallas Morning News' editorial board to discuss UNT's quality and the cost of tuition in Texas. I also told the Dallas Business Journal that UNT offers students a quality education and strong career paths, which helps us to be highly ranked.

Welcome to Mean Green country

We're continuing to roll out enrollment initiatives -- like Eagle Express Tuition and Eagle Advantage -- to continue attracting the best and brightest to UNT. Starting in the fall, UNT will offer Oklahoma residents seeking a bachelor's degree a special tuition rate that cuts in half their cost to attend UNT. If you have family and friends in Oklahoma, I hope you'll help spread the word about our new tuition rate for Oklahomans.

#BeMineTODAY: Love is on the air

UNT student Halie Gibbs and alum Nick Marino Jr. got engaged on the Today Show as part of its ‎#BeMineTODAY series. Nick, who runs marketing for a local app that is working to end hunger in America, and Halie, who is now the North Texas Coalition Coordinator for Drug Prevention Resources Inc., are a perfect match, "meant to change the world together." Congratulations, Halie and Nick! Watch Nick's proposal.

Bobby McFerrin
Don't Worry Be Happy it's Bobby McFerrin

Grammy-winning vocal artist Bobby McFerrin kept students, faculty and staff, and the public entertained and inspired in his lectures, Q&As and sold-out performance during his visit to UNT. It was great to see the creativity and talent of our students in the One O'Clock Lab Band and Jazz Choir and our music faculty as they improvised with Mr. McFerrin -- best known for his 1980s hit song Don't Worry Be Happy.
