2017 spring orientation
We welcomed a new group of students this spring at orientation
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

Happy New Year! I look forward to continuing our progress, building on last year's milestones -- from being named to Carnegie's top tier of research universities to hitting a new enrollment record and playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Our reaccreditation also was recently approved, which shows that we meet rigorous standards.

To build on this momentum and ensure that we're Tier One across the board, we're making important investments in our people, programs and infrastructure.

Our campus will continue its transformation with new and renovated buildings that include:

  • A bigger, better home for the College of Visual Arts and Design, which will bring our programs together in one place.
  • The renovated Science Research Building, providing much-needed innovative lab and research space. We will soon follow up with an expansion at Discovery Park to create a biomedical engineering facility.
  • A renovation to Sage Hall to make it a stronger one-stop academic success center for students.
  • A new residence hall, dining hall and Visitors Center, all to be co-located.

As you can see, this will be another busy year for us. But these are all important changes to help us move forward.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Our faculty are conducting essential research -- and attracting significant funding. Our Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation Program is part of a collaboration that received $15 million for a new center to support research and conservation in Chile. Two of our materials science and engineering researchers are part of teams that have received U.S. Department of Energy funding, $10 million to make nuclear waste disposal safer and $4.5 million to improve superconducting materials. And two of our psychology researchers received $2.2 million from the National Institutes of Health to study flu vaccine effectiveness in nurses.

I love seeing the success of our alumni who are making impacts and driving progress. Some are featured in D CEO's special edition, The Dallas 500, a list of the most powerful business leaders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Two of our alumni were tapped to be city managers in the North Texas region and join a growing list of cities led by UNT alumni. T.C. Broadnax is the new Dallas city manager (left) and Bob Hart is the new Corinth city manager (right). Both received an M.P.A. from UNT. Congratulations to all of the featured alumni. 2017 Heart of Dallas Bowl
Building on momentum

Big thanks to our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends for turning out in force at the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl Dec. 27 and helping to turn the Cotton Bowl green with more than 39,000 fans. Even though the Mean Green football team lost to Army 38-31 in overtime, it was a sign of a new era for UNT -- a stronger team, a stronger athletics program and a prouder Mean Green Nation. Led by Coach Seth Littrell, who made his debut at UNT this season, the team made us proud by making one of the best college football turnarounds in 2016. We will build on this momentum in our athletics programs and across the university. Onward and upward!

Prakeet Kalakuntla
TAMS student one of Top 5 winners in national STEM competition

Kudos to TAMS student Prateek Kalakuntla for being one of the Top 5 winners in the 2016 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology named in December. After he was named one of 11 national finalists, Prateek won a $30,000 scholarship for his work to create a sensor to detect mercury and other toxins in drinking water. He worked with Mohammad Omary, University Distinguished Research Professor of chemistry.
