Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

As UNT's president, I am committed to making our university a first-choice institution. This means supporting our students' success, championing our alumni's achievements and matching our resources with the needs of our partners. While we're focused on offering the best educational experience, we also must be accountable and transparent with our resources.

Straight from Smatresk

As you've likely heard, UNT has recently faced budget and fiscal problems. We are resolving these challenges, and our new vice president for finance and administration Bob Brown — who by the way is a UNT alumnus — is off to a great start. Our team is on a five-track path to putting UNT on the cutting edge of higher education management. In short, we're embracing this as an opportunity to get better.

We're also making sure that our strengths match industry needs. We're growing our programs in areas like IT, logistics, informatics and big data, and we're mining the potential of our fast-growing College of Engineering. And we are giving students the opportunity to access an array of technologies and to tap into a world of knowledge and expertise. We're focused on students, quality and excellence — and always will be.

I look forward to sharing my vision and priorities with each of you through this newsletter. And now that I've joined the wonderful world of Twitter, I hope you'll follow me @UNTPrez to stay more in tune with the UNT community.

UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
Attracting the cream of the crop
UNT Degrees turn into high tech careers
Students are the reason any university exists. Since becoming president, I have focused on making UNT a top choice for bright, talented students. Because recruiting and enrolling students is so essential to what we do, I'm creating a cabinet-level position — vice president for enrollment — who will be charged with expanding our reach and attracting more high-quality students from across Texas, the nation and the world to UNT.

Advancing UNT together
Seeing green in everyday products we use
Strong alumni support is a cornerstone for great universities. While I plan to be very involved in our fundraising efforts, it's also important UNT has robust leadership for our Division of Advancement. Michael Monticino, who has done an extraordinary job leading the division, is leaving UNT Aug. 3, calling for a national search for a new vice president for advancement. My goal is to find a replacement who brings structure to the division, reinvigorates our fundraising and builds on our historic recommitment to alumni.

Leadership eyeing excellence
Seeing green in everyday products we use
Our evolution as a university depends on our leadership — the people charged with moving UNT forward. We're conducting national searches for deans for the College of Visual Arts and Design, College of Arts and Sciences and the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science to replace the deans who are retiring or serving as interims in these areas. We'll find leaders with experience and vision to keep UNT advancing. And I'll keep you informed about our hires.

Setting our priorities
We're deep in the university's planning season and we're busy setting goals that will guide how we operate and overcome challenges in this upcoming academic year and the future. I believe that planning is 90 percent implementation and 10 percent inspiration. Learn how UNT's leadership team is applying this strategy to build a solid foundation for our future.

Shining a green light
Tartan
Go tartan for UNT's 125th
Are you old enough to know that tartan designs were all the rage in 1970s' punk fashion? And hip enough to know that tartan designs are making a comeback — at least at UNT? I'm proud to know UNT is keeping up with the trends for our 125th anniversary in 2015. Learn how student Casey Heidt, a metalsmithing and fibers major, helped develop UNT's tartan design to celebrate our history and culture.
Watch football with me
Let's cheer the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl champions to another winning season. Email president@unt.edu by Aug. 8 to enter to win two passes to join me Sept. 6 at the Mean Green vs. SMU home game in the President's Suite at Apogee Stadium. And don't forget to show your green pride at Homecoming Nov. 3-8. Buy tickets.
UNT Education = The secret to success for alumni
UNT education = The secret to success for alumni
I've quickly learned that UNT is a place that inspires creativity and innovation no matter what degree program you study. Find out for yourself in the latest issue of The North Texan, where you can read about alumni who are using the knowledge they gained at UNT to succeed as entrepreneurs. You'll learn our alums are behind successful businesses such as Rudy's Tortillas and Spec's Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods.
