UNT orientation students
Some of the UNT Family's newest members flash an Eagle Claw during Orientation at the Coliseum.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

With each of this summer's Orientation sessions, we welcome new members into our creative and caring Mean Green Family. We're teaching them about our university traditions, exposing them to majors and programs of study, helping them enroll in fall courses, introducing them to a host of support services, guiding them throughout our beautiful campus, and connecting them with knowledgeable faculty and staff who will support them throughout their UNT journey.

A financial investment is required by each student pursuing a UNT degree, and we remain committed to helping students minimize college debt by implementing strategic affordability initiatives. Many of the affordability activities underway — a one-stop integrated financial support center, completion and retention grants, institutional debt forgiveness, and open educational resources — are best practices identified through our collaboration with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and eight peer universities. By promoting access and affordability, we increase opportunity for students to achieve their goals and thrive in our rapidly changing world.

This fall promises a vibrant, full university experience, and we hope you will make plans to visit. Homecoming celebrations are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13, when the Mean Green face off against UTEP. Mark your calendar now, and we'll share the complete schedule and tailgating information as it becomes available.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
College of Science Dean
Professor of Biological Sciences Dr. Pamela Padilla was appointed dean of the College of Science. Dr. Padilla succeeds the College of Science's founding dean, Su Gao, who stepped down June 15 to take a leave of absence to care for family. Dr. Padilla joined UNT in 2002 and has sustained an active research laboratory while holding numerous leadership posts. She previously worked as associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Science and was permanently appointed UNT's associate vice president for research and innovation in October 2019 after serving one year as interim. In 2010, she earned the UNT Early Career Award for Research and Creativity, and she was a Faculty Leadership Fellow from 2015 to 2016. Congratulations on your appointment, Dr. Padilla!

Research and Innovation
The Division of Research and Innovation announced three new appointments that will expand research leadership opportunities for faculty members while propelling UNT's enterprise as a Tier One research university. Dr. Aaron Roberts, a professor of environmental toxicology, pictured left, will serve as associate vice president of research, filling the role previously held by Dr. Pamela Padilla. Dr. Roberts served as director of UNT's Advanced Environmental Research Institute (AERI), which will now be led by Dr. Amie Lund, center, an associate professor of environmental toxicology. Dr. Lund is the first woman to lead one of UNT's four Institutes of Research Excellence. Dr. Mark McLellan, vice president for research and innovation, also announced the appointment of Dr. Chandra Donnell Carey, an associate professor of rehabilitation and health services, pictured right, to serve in a senior leadership role as the division's first Faculty Fellow. I know our research enterprise will continue to flourish under their leadership.

Best Article of the Year
The North Texan article "The Past as a Present" earned the Platinum Award as the Best Article of the Year in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education awards competition — chosen out of hundreds of submissions from around the world. Written by Erin Cristales ('11 M.S.) and appearing in the summer 2020 issue, it's the story of a team of UNT students whose research into a disappeared freedmen's community uncovered much more than they expected about the history of Denton County, including a historic one-room African American schoolhouse in need of preservation. In addition to student and alumni researchers, the winning work features Drs. Todd Moye and Andrew Torget from the Department of History, alumnus Willie Hudspeth ('90, '93 M.Ed.), and many lives resurrected from the hidden past.

National Esports recognition
UNT Esports is having a great year! Coordinator Dylan Wray was recognized as one of the top 12 collegiate esports coaches and directors in the nation — one of just two in Texas — by eFuse, a company that serves as a hub for esports. The UNT Rocket League team took home first place in the West conference and the West playoffs and was third in the nation in Collegiate Rocket League Spring. The Overwatch team is ranked 14th in the nation out of more than 300 teams, and the League of Legends team, in one of the most competitive leagues, is rising in the rankings.

Spotlight on Excellence
Ecosystem geographer selected for EPA's clean air committee

Ecosystem geographer and associate professor Dr. Alexandra Ponette-González is one of seven environmental experts selected to serve on the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee. She will serve on the nation's top advisory committee informing air quality standards, which put limits on six pollutants — carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide — that are common in outdoor air. A highly published researcher and recipient of the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development grant, Dr. Ponette-González's most recent research reveals how the diverse community of organisms and non-living materials in a single raindrop could have major implications for understanding how ecosystems work. Congratulations to Dr. Ponette-González on her appointment!

Mean Green in the media

Many members of Mean Green Nation have landed in the media recently, including a retirement announcement from UNT System Chancellor Lesa Roe. UNT has made tremendous strides under Chancellor Roe's leadership and we are thankful for the ways she has helped us thrive. She is an expert collaborator who excels at pulling the right people into the room to build consensus. We will miss her! Be sure to check out these other media hits from our faculty experts and alumni, which will make you proud:

  • An expert on textile recycling and sustainability, College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism Dean Jana Hawley discussed with Popular Science the reasons why clothing items often land in the dump, rather than a recycling facility. Geographic location and a lack of recycling infrastructure often play a part, she says.
  • In light of current political discussions about critical race theory and its place in public school education, Associate Professor of Communication Studies Dr. Suzanne Enck spoke with WFAA, and History Lecturer Dr. Kerry Goldmann's conversation with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was picked up by Yahoo! News. Dr. Goldmann also was featured in a Scripps story that was picked up by Scripps-owned TV stations and media websites around the country.
  • Dr. Nat Pope, associate professor of risk management and insurance, shared with The New York Times why extended car warranties are a worthless investment for most vehicle owners.
  • The Dallas Morning News showcased Urban Site Selection, a digital tool to identify low-income communities where supermarkets are needed. The tool was developed in collaboration with Dr. Chetan Tiwari, an associate professor in the Department of Geography and the Environment.
  • Associate Professor of History Dr. Andrew Torget discussed the growing observation of Juneteenth with USA Today.
  • Dr. Trent Petrie, professor and director of the Center for Sports Psychology, was quoted in an article by the Associated Press discussing the mental health concerns of athletes.
  • The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area took center stage as NBC5 covered the hard work of students, staff, and volunteers who are clearing out encroaching trees in an effort to restore prairie grasses, wildflowers, and wildlife at the 2,600-acre nature preserve thanks to a $17,000 grant from the Anita Berry Martin Memorial Fund at the North Texas Community Foundation, UNT, and Friends of LLELA.
  • The Denton Record-Chronicle reported my appointment as chair of the Conference USA Board of Governors where I enjoy supporting the league and its student-athletes. I also am excited by my recent appointment to the NCAA Board of Governors.
  • This delicious story from Spectrum News covers some of the hard-working people and creative ideas making our Dining Services shine. Executive Director Peter Balabuch ('97) guides the tour featuring our hydroponic garden, Clark Bakery, and Union dining.
  • Alum Kirk Tatom ('94) — the guitarist and backing vocalist for the band Deep Blue Something, best known for its 1995 hit "Breakfast at Tiffany's" — was recently featured in the MPA (Mortgage Professional America) magazine. As president of Dallas-based Tatom Lending, Kirk says both the music and mortgage industries require the same energy and passion.
UNT Pod shines light on brightest "North Star" faculty

Great professors can serve as guiding lights — teachers whose passion, dedication, and support help students see what's possible and set them on a path to making the world a better place. Each UNT faculty member possesses unique characteristics that help them develop authentic, memorable connections with our students. The latest episode of UNT Pod highlights eight "North Stars" among the faculty who students and alumni recognized for illuminating the way to a brighter future. Honored faculty include Dr. Kimi King from the Department of Political Science, Paho Mann from the Department of Studio Art, Dr. Katsura Aoyama from the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, Dr. Christopher Fuhrmann from the Department of History, Brittany McElroy from the Mayborn School of Journalism, Dr. John Quintanilla, pictured, from the Department of Math, Dr. Angie Cartwright from the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, and Dr. Rick Reidy from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Don't miss this podcast episode to hear from our eight "North Stars," as well as the students and alumni who nominated them for recognition.

A full game day experience at
Apogee Stadium

Despite an unprecedented year, the Mean Green momentum remains strong for our student-athletes. Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker recently outlined notable accomplishments from the past season, including the second-highest overall winning percentage in the past 40 years and Conference USA championships for our softball, women's golf, and men's basketball teams, as well as individual C-USA championships for women's golfer Audrey Tan, men's golfer Vicente Marzilio, and Zion Hill with the men's javelin. Plus, the men's basketball team won its first NCAA tournament game, five sports achieved a perfect Academic Performance Rate, and the Graduation Success Rate increased to a record 86 percent to make all of Mean Green Nation proud. We look forward to this vibrant fall semester and the return of a full game day experience at Apogee Stadium. Plan to join us Aug. 14 at Apogee Stadium for the Coaches Caravan event and to gather with fellow UNT fans. Don't wait to get your tickets for the fall — with season and mini-plan tickets available, there are options for every family.
