Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

We recently made several key hires in academics and started our search for a new athletic director -- all important ways we're moving our university forward.

UNT has retained the services of Eastman & Beaudine Inc., a leading sports executive search firm, to assist in our national search for a new athletic director. In the interim, deputy athletic director Hank Dickenson -- a devoted member of our athletics staff for more than two decades -- is serving as acting director. We hope to identify a new athletic director by midsummer.

John W. RichmondI'm also excited to share that John W. Richmond (left), director of the Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will join UNT Aug. 1 as the new dean of UNT's College of Music. As one of the largest and most comprehensive music schools in the world, the College of Music will benefit from the strong leadership and expertise of a seasoned professional like Dr. Richmond.

Robert A. WatlingAs we come closer to starting our annual strategic planning and implementation process, we will draw on the expertise of Robert A. Watling (right), our new vice provost for academic resources. The former assistant dean for business operations at North Carolina State University, Mr. Watling has more than 15 years of financial management and institutional strategic planning experience. As UNT's chief budget and human resources officer for academics, he will play an important role in helping UNT plan for the future.

Having the right leadership team in place is key to helping our students and the university succeed. Last week, Victor Prybutok, Regents Professor of decision sciences, was named vice provost for UNT's Toulouse Graduate School. As a proven leader with a strong history of supporting graduate studies at UNT, he's a great fit for this role. We also hope in the next few months to name new deans for our College of Information and College of Education, to replace deans who have retired.

I'm looking forward to working with our new leadership to continue to provide our students with the best educational experience in Texas.

UNT Proud,

The Inside Scoop
Aviation logistics

Solving the pains of airport travel

Aviation logistics students Michael Hafner, David Looney, Austin Stromberg and Hong Yun Yong created a concept for a mobile airport app using technology similar to Google Maps to pull data from across terminals nationwide to help passengers better navigate airports. The app, Paeros, also increases the safety and situational awareness of airport customers and employees by allowing them to voluntarily share their location with air carriers and airport staff. The innovative idea landed UNT a first-time win in the American Association of Airport Executives' student research competition. I'm proud to see UNT's aviation logistics program, the first four-year program of its kind in Texas, preparing students for careers in aviation.

How can households save water?

UNT's Science Education Research Lab's answer to saving water is teaching school children about water conservation. Ruthanne 'Rudi' Thompson, lab director and associate professor of biology, and her graduate students have found evidence of significant water savings of nearly 600 gallons a month in households of students who have received hands-on water conservation education versus those who didn't. The lab was named a winner of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's 2016 Texas Environmental Excellence Award for its work. Congrats to Dr. Thompson and her students for helping to make a difference in our schools and communities.

Psychology key to athletes' ACL surgery recovery?
Researchers in UNT's Center for Sport Psychology and Performance Excellence are conducting a study, Return to Sport, to determine if different psychological interventions are effective in improving athletes' physical rehabilitation after ACL surgery. Led by (from left) Trent A. Petrie, professor of psychology and center director, and psychology doctoral students Shelly Sheinbein and Kristina Clevinger, the study also examines athletes' psychological responses to injury, overall well-being and confidence in returning to their sport. Learn why Dr. Petrie says exercise is a good way to deal with trauma.

Lab band travels Down Under

UNT's Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band started summer on a high note with a trip to Australia and the premiere of pieces from the band's upcoming album, Lab 2016. The Australian adventure included jazz collaborations with musicians and music educators from Australia and New Zealand, concerts and clinics for students at the James Morrison Academy of Music and a headlining performance at the Generations in Jazz Music Festival before a crowd of 6,500 jazz students and fans.
