Dear Alum,

I hope you are having a great start to your summer, wherever your travels are taking you. Here on campus, our freshman orientation sessions are in full swing and we're happy to see our bright and talented incoming students — the Class of 2021 — learning about all things Mean Green.

Their excitement is contagious as they get ready to begin their college journey, and we're looking forward to doing all we can to help them achieve their dreams. We expect another record number of freshmen this fall and are committed to offering them the best educational experience in the state.

If you were following the news out of Austin this legislative session, you know there were some early predictions of drastic cuts in state funding for higher education. As it turned out, our legislators found a way to make the final cuts more manageable, although UNT will still face a reduction of about $3.5 million beginning in 2018-19.

Our predicted increases in enrollment would help offset those cuts, so we are looking ahead optimistically while still working on contingency plans. In good news for students, lawmakers increased funding for the TEXAS Grant program, the state's largest financial aid program, so many more who are eligible for those grants will receive them.

And in more good news for our university, this summer marks the arrival of our new provost and vice president for academic affairs, Jennifer Evans-Cowley. An alum of our M.P.A. program, she returns to UNT from Ohio State University, where she was vice provost for capital planning and regional campuses.

She will hit the ground running when she officially begins July 1, working with Dean Kinshuk of the College of Information to organize our annual planning implementation workshop in August. Our focus this year is on advancing student learning through technology and educational innovation. You'll hear more about this in the coming months as we develop plans for moving forward as a global leader in learning technologies and helping to ensure student success.

Before we know it, summer classes will be over and fall will arrive with brand new and returning students. They are the purpose for our planning and our work, and we are dedicated to helping them earn a great education and build successful careers, communities and lives.

The Inside Scoop
Greene scholarship
Mean Joe Green and UNT President Neal Smatresk
Debbie and I couldn't wait to attend an event this month hosted by legendary UNT alum "Mean" Joe Greene and his family, including two sons who also are alumni. The event raised funds for the new Agnes Lucille Craft Greene Memorial Scholarship at UNT in honor of Joe's late wife. It also featured other NFL Hall of Famers — like Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett and Charles Haley — and some impressive food and auction items. Agnes, who met Joe as a freshman her first week on campus in 1966, died of breast cancer in 2015. The scholarship will be awarded to students who are breast cancer survivors or have parents or guardians who have dealt with the disease.

College changes

Our university welcomed two new colleges this spring as the College of Arts and Sciences split into the College of Science and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. It's a move expected to help bolster research funding and program offerings while providing more support for each department and expanding our prominence as a Carnegie-ranked Tier One research university. Also new this spring, the College of Public Affairs and Community Service was renamed the College of Health and Public Service. It includes a new Department of Social Work in addition to its previous departments and has plans to grow pre-professional health and allied health programs.

Seeing opportunities
Students holding letters spelling Google
Students in the College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism got a firsthand look at business operations and the future of their industries this May. While one group toured hotels and city clubs in Chicago and another headed for the manufacturing facilities and retail establishments of New York, a group on the new Digital Study Tour went west. This group got a behind-the-scenes look at Google (they're pictured at its headquarters in Mountain View, California), Facebook, Amazon, Nike and more, learning about innovations and career opportunities in digital environments and the ever-changing digital retailing industry.

Exclusive invitation
Pamela Padilla
One of our UNT researchers got a special invitation to an advanced leadership institute taking place this month in Washington, D.C. Pamela Padilla, associate professor of biology and associate dean of research and graduate studies in our new College of Science, was one of only 15 scientists across the nation — from academia, industry and government — invited to the institute. It's a partnership between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. Dr. Padilla says she is most looking forward to passing what she learns along to her students.

The future is bright

Our latest Mean Green record breakers are just getting started. Conference USA Freshman of the Year Kristyn Archuleta (left) won the C-USA outdoor championship in women's javelin with a school record throw of 49.39 meters. And the tennis doubles team of sophomores Maria Kononova (right) and Tamuna Kutubidze (center) set program doubles records for wins, winning percentage and winning streak this season with 17 consecutive wins and one loss. Their final rankings were a program-best No. 58 in the nation and No. 6 in the Texas region. Maria ranked No. 76 nationally and No. 9 in the region, also program bests. She also set the singles program record with 18 wins. Tamuna had 11 singles wins even after missing the start of the season to recover from surgery.
