UNT National ad
The UNT community is all about the people, as showcased in our new national ad.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

At UNT, it's the people who make our community special. Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni have all played a vital role in making our campus a first-choice university, one that nearly 41,000 students now call home. For 130 years, we have helped students from all walks of life forge a better, brighter future for themselves and their families — and our one-of-a-kind community also has inspired those same students to push boundaries and transform the world.

Our new national ad highlights a few members of our UNT family, including Dr. Valerie Martinez-Ebers, Latina/o and Mexican-American Studies program director, and Mean Green running backs coach Patrick Cobbs ('05). You'll also spot our campus' friendliest ambassador, Nicole Trower, who joyfully greets guests from the Hurley transportation booth, as well as Eagle Ambassadors Nathan Ash-Milby, Emely Garcia, and Kaci Wright. I hope you'll spot this advertisement on Hulu, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Linkedin, or on DFW-area news broadcasts weekday mornings and Sunday nights.

Our community's uniquely tenacious and supportive nature was on full display during February's winter storm as UNT essential workers went above and beyond to care for our campus infrastructure and the students living in our residence halls. The New York Times lauded alum Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale's decision to open his Houston furniture store as a refuge for those without power or water.

Additionally, the ingenuity of our UNT family is on display each day. The talented musicians and world-class faculty from the College of Music earned us honors as the best performing arts college in the nation, and Josh Gilbert, media arts assistant professor of practice, is co-creator of the new CBS All Access TV series, "Coyote." Three College of Engineering faculty researchers — Dr. Diana Berman in materials science, Dr. Hua Sun in electrical engineering, and Dr. Hui Zhao in computer science — received National Science Foundation CAREER Awards, given to faculty in their first 10 years of a full-time college appointment whose work has had a high impact in their discipline or on society.

We each possess unique talents and interests, but our shared caring, creativity, and resilience — and our love for the Mean Green — are what bind us together as one UNT family. Thank you for the many ways you propel UNT forward.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
Mean Green
Mobile Media
Through the Mean Green Mobile Media project, journalism and media arts students will soon have the opportunity to broadcast live events to our UNT family at large. The project, which was selected for funding by the UNT Diamond Eagles Society, will allow a small, socially distanced student production crew to broadcast UNT campus, sporting, news, and community events from a mobile trailer. The project will provide students with real-world field production experience and is a joint venture between the Mayborn School of Journalism, the Department of Media Arts, and Mean Green Athletics. Every year, members of the Diamond Eagles Society make $1,000 contributions, which are pooled together to fund a project determined by a majority vote. You are welcome to join Diamond Eagles and make a meaningful impact for our students.

Remembering
Dr. Bertina Combes
Mayborn students
For more than 30 years, Dr. Bertina Hildreth Combes, vice provost for faculty success and professor of special education, dedicated her life to serving UNT and helping our students thrive. I am deeply saddened to share that Dr. Combes, 62, died Feb. 19 in Denton. She leaves behind her beloved family, including children Ashley ('17) and Julius ('19). Dr. Combes held a variety of leadership roles during her tenure — coordinator of special education programs, and associate and interim dean of the College of Education — and mentored many colleagues and junior faculty. I know many of our graduates are successful educators because of her impact, and were inspired by her kindness, wisdom, and positivity. A scholarship to honor her legacy as an educator has been created, and a virtual celebration of her life is planned for March 9.

SVP Bob Brown to Retire
When I came to UNT seven years ago, we were in deep financial trouble and it was imperative I hire a smart, deliberate, and collaborative chief financial officer who could guide UNT through a financial transformation. UNT alumnus Bob Brown  ('80, '90 M.B.A.) stepped into the role and set the foundation for our recent progress. With Bob's support and dedication, we've been able to achieve great successes in recent years, including designation as a Tier One research university, record-setting enrollment, campus beautification, creation of 100 new doctoral lines, Frisco campus establishment, and significant main campus growth. On May 7, after 41 years in higher education, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Bob Brown will retire. He will be deeply missed. A search committee has been formed to identify Bob's replacement, and I will keep the UNT community updated on the status of that search.

Spotlight on Excellence
A year of unprecedented resilience, achievement

UNT has faced many great challenges and successes during our 130-year history and the 2020 President's Annual Report highlights our continued progress and accomplishments. You'll read about the many ways the UNT community's persevering, caring spirit helped us to navigate uncharted territory and move forward. Last year, we defied national trends and increased our enrollment to nearly 41,000 — an all-time high. We were designated a Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution, saw 89 of our programs ranked among the nation's Top 100, and cheered as our institution was named one of the nation's Top 10 Public Universities on the Rise. Our research enterprise continues to expand, with more faculty and students than ever engaged in funded research, and our collaborations with national laboratories and industry are increasing. We opened a new Biomedical Artificial Intelligence Lab, and five researchers received prestigious Early Career Awards from the National Science Foundation. And let's not forget a Conference USA championship and NCAA Tournament spot for our men's basketball team. It's amazing all that our UNT family accomplishes as we move forward together.

UNT Super Pit
Mean Green, Conference USA
to host NIT

UNT and Conference USA are excited to host the 2021 National Invitation Tournament featuring 16 men's basketball teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. NIT officials decided to host the tournament in one geographic location in the interest of creating a safe and healthy environment for all participants. We are happy to host games at the UNT Coliseum, with first-round games scheduled March 17-20 ahead of the championship March 27-28. All 16 games of the 2021 NIT will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2, and we look forward to seeing the Super Pit on display.
