Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

We are just now at the halfway mark for this spring semester, and we've already seen some incredible successes that are moving our university forward and making us a stronger institution.

Our spring enrollment is up more than 5 percent from last spring, continuing our progress as the fastest-growing university in Texas. I'm also proud that we aren't just getting students started on their journey but also helping them to succeed through graduation — and beyond. Our caring community helps ensure our students excel and find the career path that is right for them. We've helped more students cross the finish line with a degree faster than before, and we're working to keep costs low. We've seen a 26% increase in degrees awarded in the last 10 years, and 40% of those students are graduating with no debt, thanks to our focus on providing a high-quality and affordable education.

To ensure we continue to get better at everything we do, our campus joined with our UNT System schools in adopting a shared set of values — We Care, Better Together, Be Curious, Courageous Integrity, and Show Your Fire. These aren't new concepts to us, but we've purposefully identified them to ensure they become an actionable part of our campus culture. These values will serve as guideposts for how we do business going forward and will no doubt help us better celebrate our vibrant and caring campus culture so we can build a stronger workforce for our state and nation.

This week, we also had great news for our students and industry partners at our UNT at Frisco branch campus when longtime academic leader Audhesh Paswan took the helm as vice provost and dean of the New College. In this role, Dr. Paswan is charged with growing our Frisco enrollment by helping to develop innovative programs that bridge the gap between industry and higher education so our students will be the best career-ready leaders who have the know-how to thrive in a rapidly changing world. It's only fitting he will be officed at our new state-of-the-art Frisco Landing, our first permanent building in Frisco. Take a virtual tour of Frisco Landing.

I am truly excited to see so much progress happening at UNT, and I remain committed to ensuring our university stands as a caring and inclusive place to learn and work so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their dreams.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Sculpture Installation
"Soaring," the aircraft-grade aluminum sculpture suspended along a stairwell at Frisco Landing, is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between UNT at Frisco and the College of Visual Arts and Design. It started as a class assignment to develop a sculpture proposal and ended with student Archit Karkare's design becoming his first permanent art piece. The artwork was fabricated and installed in partnership with UNT alumni-owned 23 Design Co. (Karkare is pictured second from left with 23 Design Co. alums Loren Jones, owner and founder Brandon Taylor, and Wesley Flessner.)
