UNT graduates at the first University-wide commencement ceremony
The Class of 2015 said goodbye with the Eagle claw but they're forever united by UNT green pride.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

It was an honor to celebrate the achievements of our graduates during our inaugural University-wide Commencement on May 16. An estimated 8,290 students are graduating from UNT in 2014-15 and will join the workforce as leaders, creators, change agents and entrepreneurs.

President Smatresk presents George Dunham with the Presidential Medal of Honor.

This year's commencement was filled with many firsts. I presented alumnus George Dunham -- the voice of Mean Green athletics for more than two decades -- the Presidential Medal of Honor. It is the highest presidential honor given to an individual and Mr. Dunham is the first to receive the award during my presidency. See who received an honorary doctorate.

Bringing more excitement to the affair was Gov. Greg Abbott and his inspiring message of life lessons, which was full of wisdom and humor. I hope the governor's encouraging words resonated with our graduates and will stay with them for years to come. And I thank our governor for joining us for this special occasion.

The Class of 2015 will forever have a special place in our history. Their transformation from student to UNT graduate marked the beginning of our celebrations to commemorate our 125th anniversary as an institution. Throughout this year, we will celebrate the progress we've made since we enrolled our first students in 1890 and taught them in a classroom above a hardware store on the Denton square. I hope you'll join us in the coming months for events marking this important milestone.

I have no doubt that our newest class of Eagles will soar in everything they do and will use their newfound knowledge, creativity and freedom to change the world.

UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
Sibling competition
Michael and David Hashe
TAMS brothers ace SATs

Test taking can unnerve the best of us, but not brothers Michael and David Hashe, students in UNT's Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, who earned perfect SAT scores. Michael and David were among only 583 students nationwide who took the SAT and achieved perfect scores. It's quite an accomplishment for the brothers, who have distinguished themselves as talented students, scholars and researchers.

Electrical engineering
Shengli Fu and Yan Wan
2 ways our program sparks

Are you a fan of sci-fi? If so, you'll love hearing about the research of Yan Wan (right), an assistant professor of electrical engineering and our ninth faculty member to earn the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award. Dr. Wan's innovative research includes developing Wi-Fi capable drones -- with electrical engineering chair Shengli Fu (left) -- and other cyber-physical systems. If this sparks your interest or that of someone you know, consider becoming one of the first students to enroll in our new Ph.D. electrical engineering program starting in fall 2015.

UNT Campus
UNT to purchase Sack & Save

We're in the final stages of buying the Sack & Save property for additional space to meet the needs of our growing campus community. With the I-35E expansion eliminating most of the grocery store's parking, it was a great time to acquire the remaining portion of the site to provide services on that side of campus and create a stronger "front porch" to our campus. We will work so the store can remain in the building until we need to start renovating the space.

Shelley Cushman and Matthew Bourbon
Creativity at work
Our 2015-16 fellows in UNT's Institute for the Advancement of the Arts will inspire you and our university community with their creative research projects this academic year. Shelley Cushman, professor of dance, is choreographing a new work and reconstructing three works to be included in her film project Cinematic Caricatures, which will be housed in the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts' dance collection. Matthew Bourbon, associate professor of studio arts, is completing a new body of paintings to exhibit in several U.S. cities. I love that creativity is always at play at UNT. Learn how these IAA fellows are exploring works from the past.

UNT Alumni Association: We want your feedback

How can you stay better connected with your fellow alumni? Share your thoughts with the UNT Alumni Association, which has partnered with FGI Research to conduct an alumni survey. Throughout May, the association will be sending an electronic survey to alumni to gather feedback about programming and services. Your input will help the association measure alumni satisfaction levels, preferences for programs and benefits. This is a great opportunity for you to help enhance the way we engage with alumni, and you'll be entered to win prizes for your participation.
