2016 homecoming
This year's Homecoming, Mean Green Eaglempics, kept the Mean Green pride and spirit alive in all of us, including our granddaughter who helped us celebrate Homecoming.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

I hope you were able to join us for Homecoming this year. We celebrated 126 years of excellence, tradition and pride as a campus community, and we had a great time!

Homecoming also is about game day fun. Our Mean Green football team has had some impressive wins under new coach Seth Littrell, like the one against Army in October. We hope to finish the season strong with two games to go -- Saturday's home game against Southern Miss and the Nov. 26 game at UTEP.

We're focused on building a winning program in football and in all of our sports -- and we're in it for the long haul. We're a Carnegie-ranked top-tier -- Tier One -- research university, and we want to be Tier One in athletics, too. Many of our teams, like our women's soccer team, already are excelling in competition. The team recently captured its third-straight Conference USA regular-season championship and has three players on the C-USA All-Conference list. We want that kind of success across the board. With our new vice president and director of athletics, Wren Baker, we have the right leader with the vision, energy and experience to make that happen.

Athletics helps to build our image and reputation, along with world-class academics and research. Together, they make UNT a nationally prominent university and a top choice for students.

The support of our alumni and friends is another essential ingredient. I hope you'll continue to support UNT, get involved and show the world what it means to be a proud member of the Mean Green Nation. Go Mean Green!

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Prateek Kalakuntla, a TAMS student, is a regional finalist in the 2016 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology for his research on ways to sense and remove toxic heavy metals from water. Spotlight on Excellence
Plant leaves close up
Researching alternative energy use
UNT has made a name for itself as a hub of cutting-edge plant science, thanks to researchers like Kent Chapman. The Regents Professor of biological sciences received a $650,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science to study the cellular storage of lipids in plants. His research could lead to applications for sustainable fuels, chemicals and other products.

The Art of Innovation

Our alumni work at the intersection of art, science and technology. From a lead game designer to an artist re-creating lost artifacts with 3-D printers and a musician researching medical needs of performers, these alumni are applying the knowledge and skills learned at UNT to produce innovative work.
