Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

We have set our sights on becoming a nationally prominent public research university and, in order to achieve that goal, we're putting our innovative, interdisciplinary research to work.

President Neal SmatreskI'm excited to share that we've launched four Institutes of Research Excellence that will help us on our journey and capitalize on our strengths. Tom McCoy, vice president for research and economic development, is leading this new endeavor, and I joined him at the Oct. 15 launch event (left) naming the new institutes as the:

The new institutes are a catalyst for us to increase our reach and impact, establish more industry partnerships and create solutions that benefit the greater good. I encourage you to read more about the institutes and their missions.

Terrance Pohlen, Tom McCoy, Richard Dixon, Samuel Atkinson and Rajiv MishraWe've chosen four of our top researchers -- Terrance Pohlen, associate professor of logistics, Richard Dixon, Distinguished Research Professor of biology, Samuel Atkinson, Regents Professor of biology, and Rajiv Mishra, Distinguished Research Professor of materials science and engineering (pictured from left with Dr. McCoy, second from left) -- to lead each of the new institutes in their field of expertise. With their leadership and knowledge, the institutes will become a hub for faculty collaborations in areas such as water and environment, next-generation structural materials, logistics, and plant sciences and bio-based products. This innovative approach will better enable our faculty and student researchers to make new impacts in their fields, to be more competitive as they seek federal funding and to be go-to resources for public and private partnerships.

I'm proud of this exciting new step forward for UNT and the transformation it means for our research enterprise. We're poised now more than ever to be collaborative, entrepreneurial and competitive, and to go farther.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
UNT logistics
Mary Catherine Schoals, Ripley Wren and Laura Catalina Quinones Rios
Winning is thrice as nice

UNT logistics students captured a three-peat victory at the 2015 Intermodal Association of North America's fifth Intermodal EXPO Academic Challenge. The seniors, (from left) Mary Catherine Schoals, Ripley Wren and Laura Catalina Quinones Rios, bested fellow students from three of the nation's top logistics programs to win first place in the competition. The event challenged students to find innovative solutions to help the transportation industry address a severe shortage of truck drivers. I'm so proud of this trio's knowledge and business acumen because it shows why UNT's logistics program is ranked among the best in the nation.

Frisco campus
President Neal Smatresk, Then years down the line, I wouldn't be surprised to see a campus that has 5,000 to 10,000 students, so while we are dreaming, we might as well dream big.
Internet Boulevard leads to UNT's future

Our journey as an institution creating leaders began 125 years ago when founding President Joshua C. Chilton dared to dream big. Today, we're carrying on that vision and dreaming even bigger with a second campus on Internet Boulevard in Frisco. Our new Frisco campus will offer innovative programs that prepare students and help professionals further their careers by giving them business know-how, strong communication skills and technology prowess -- essential skills to thrive and succeed. I'm excited about this move that not only will help students flourish, but will supply industry with the talent that's wanted and needed in today's corporate world. Campus carry
Dr. Eric Fritsch, Department of Criminal Justice Chair, leads a town hall meeting with UNT staff to discuss the newly mandated campus carry law
Task force convenes, gathers feedback

The state's new campus carry law that goes into effect Aug. 1, 2016, will allow licensed handgun holders, who must be 21 or older, to carry concealed handguns on public university campuses and in buildings. With your feedback, we're working to determine when and where licensed, concealed handguns can be on our campus. I have assigned a Campus Carry Task Force to develop and recommend a campus carry policy and guidelines that are appropriate for UNT. I'm confident we'll put in place a policy that adheres to the spirit of the law and continues to keep our campus community's safety as our first priority.

Rally for Mean Green football

Our football coaching leadership may have changed with the departure of head football coach Dan McCarney, but our green pride and dedication to our student-athletes is stronger than ever. I'm confident in the Mean Green Nation's resilient and unwavering spirit to carry our football program forward as we begin a national search for a new head coach. In the meantime, let's rally together and cheer on interim head coach Mike Canales and the Mean Green to victory this season. I hope to see you in the stands at Apogee Stadium in all your green glory for our remaining home football games. Go Mean Green! Buy tickets today and support our student-athletes.

National Merit Finalists, Sharilyn Amaya, Spencer Taylor and Tara Gardner
5 reasons UNT's a top choice for top students

Our highly rated academic programs, faculty experts, vegan dining hall, wind turbines and world-class musicians are some of the stand-out qualities that help bring National Merit Finalists like Sharilyn Amaya, Spencer Taylor and Tara Gardner (above from left) to UNT's doorstep. With more targeted recruitment, competitive scholarship packages -- made available partly with support from five alumni -- and personal outreach, UNT began the fall semester with 30 National Merit Finalists studying on campus. I had the pleasure of having dinner with our new finalists, and I know they are poised for greatness. See why the best and brightest are choosing UNT.
