University of North Texas National Merit Scholars
UNT's new National Merit Finalists and their families bonded with the donors supporting their scholarships at a meet-and-greet during the Oct. 1 game.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

One of our biggest priorities right now is building up our research enterprise to raise our national profile and to cement our status as a Carnegie-ranked top-tier research university.

To do that, we're continuing to invest heavily in academics to ensure that we provide our students with the best education possible to help them secure important jobs and build strong careers. This includes helping more of our academic programs earn national recognition and distinctions. We have 62 academic programs ranked among the Top 100, and we are working to grow that number. While rankings aren't the only measure of quality, students and parents pay attention to them.

We've also renamed our research division the Office of Research and Innovation, which includes the new Office of Innovation and Commercialization. This signals a new emphasis to increase our patents and technology transfer efforts so that our research has a stronger impact and attracts more funding. We're also investing in hiring additional high-impact faculty in all areas where we can enhance our reputation, build our research profile and give our students world-class experiences.

Just as important is our commitment to invest in our facilities and equipment, including a $15 million renovation of our Science Research Building and another $2 million to purchase multi-user, university-managed equipment to expand our research capabilities. Read more about the exciting research being conducted by our faculty.

Everything we're doing is with an eye toward making us a stronger university and adding value to our students' education.

The Inside Scoop
$1.5M for endowed chair
Don Millican in office
Our accounting programs received a big boost thanks to a $1.5 million commitment from alumnus Don Millican ('74) and his wife, Donna, establishing the Don and Donna Millican Endowed Chair in Accounting. Ananth Seetharaman is the inaugural holder of the chair, and he has a track record for building programs nationally ranked in the Top 25. Because it is eligible for Texas Research Incentive Program matching funds, the gift also will help us maintain our standing as a Carnegie-ranked top-tier research university.

Youngest admitted student
Good Morning America website and video coverage of Jordin Phipps
Third-grader Jordin Phipps already knows she's part of UNT's Class of 2030 and has a $10,000 head start. So does the world, thanks to a viral story picked up nationally by Good Morning America and the Huffington Post, among others. The 8-year-old wowed us with her passion for school and for UNT in a video posted by her mom, alumna Nichole Smith. We thanked Jordin with early admission and a scholarship.

Spotlight on Excellence
UNT cybersecurity faculty
UNT students tackle cybersecurity threats
UNT is a hub for cybersecurity research that spans our programs in computer science, criminal justice, information technology and more. We're the only university in the country to have received more than $1 million in National Science Foundation funding for a Scholarship for Service program. The program enables students to earn their Ph.D.s with a focus on cybersecurity and then work for a federal organization such as the CIA or FBI. Read about how UNT is one of a few universities to be named both a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research and a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.

Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is a 2,000 acre "living" lab and classroom for research, outdoor education, habitat preservation and recreation. UNT helps to restore and protect LLELA while educating people about the area as part of a partnership with the city of Lewisville, the Lewisville Independent School District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
