TEDxUNT event
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

We are nearing the midpoint of the busiest semester in memory, and it is invigorating to see our campus bustling with life. Our students and faculty are winning prestigious awards, our researchers are collaborating to address important societal issues, and we continue to surpass our goals to best serve our students.

Our work to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse campus earned us the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for the fourth straight year. This award, given by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, celebrates our commitment as a Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution to helping all students thrive, including those from underserved populations.

Our caring nature knows no limits, and in the coming weeks, we will welcome five Afghan students into our UNT Family when they begin our Intensive English Language Program. These students, who will ultimately matriculate into our academic programs, came to the U.S. from Afghanistan with just their phones and the clothes they were wearing. Our UNT community is pitching in to support these Afghan students by volunteering to translate and through donations of time, resources, lodging, meal plans, clothing, and financial assistance. Donations to the International Student Emergency Fund will be used to support the students' expenses while at UNT.

Each one of our 42,000 students, 4,600 faculty and staff, and 461,000 alumni carry unique ideas, opinions, and life experiences. Last week, 11 members of our UNT Family shared their ideas and inspired others to make a difference in the world during our TEDxUNT: Create the Change event. In addition to great performances from the College of Music's Percussion Ensemble and Sweetwater Combo, we heard from speakers who encouraged us to support youth in foster care and the juvenile justice system, to advocate for people who've experienced sexual assault and those with mental illness, to be more curious, to run for office, to follow our dreams, and more. We look forward to sharing each speaker's video with you later this month, and inspiring you to Create the Change within your own circle of influence.

Working together, we accomplish great things for our university and our communities.

UNT Proud,

The Inside Scoop
Kuehne Scholars
The UNT Kuehne Speaker Series, established by alumnus Ernie Kuehne ('66), has raised more than $3 million for scholarships since 2013 and is now expanding that support with the Kuehne Speaker Series Scholarship Program. The program's first three Kuehne Scholars were awarded $25,000 each this year, making it one of the largest donor-funded scholarships at UNT. The scholars, pictured from left, are marketing senior Camryn Yoder and accounting juniors Lorenzo Wilson and JaQualia Morris. In addition to scholarship funds, Kuehne Scholars will receive access to networking and mentorship opportunities with members of the board of directors and UNT donors. The scholars will be recognized at the series' speaker events featuring James Carville on Nov. 4 and Herschel Walker on Feb. 10.

Spotlight on Excellence
A North Texas Hollywood moment:
Necessary Roughness turns 30

Many campus sites and individuals made it to the big screen 30 years ago this fall when Necessary Roughness premiered at movie theaters across the country. The football comedy featuring Scott Bakula, Hector Elizondo, Sinbad, and Kathy Ireland was filmed at UNT, allowing many students to work on the crew and as extras. Rick McKinney ('90) parlayed his experience as our Eagle mascot into an on-screen role as Rowdy the Armadillo, and then-Coliseum director Steve Selby helped officiate the game sequences. Read about Rick and Steve's experiences filming Necessary Roughness and take a moment to watch North Texas on the big screen. You'll recognize many of the locations featured, including my office in the Hurley Administration Building, which was used as Dean Philip Elias' office in the movie. Pictured are some of the athletes who had cameos. Bruzzy's UNT Golf Facility provides golfers new opportunities

UNT's championship golfers now have a state-of-the-art on-campus practice facility thanks to a lead gift from Jerome "Bruzzy" Westheimer ('65) and other Mean Green Athletics donors. A grand opening celebration for the 5,000-square-foot Bruzzy's UNT Golf Facility was hosted last month, and included a ribbon cutting and a ceremonial drive. The $3 million practice facility houses both the men's and women's golf teams and features two hitting bays with top-of-the-line swing analysis and technology, as well as a virtual putting green along with chipping and putting areas, locker rooms, study space, coaches offices, a lounge, and a kitchen. This facility, located on the east side of Apogee Stadium and Victory Hall, provides an outdoor on-campus training facility to our teams for the first time since 2003, when Eagle Point Golf Course closed.

Mean Green in the media

The North Texan magazine's fall edition is out, and you'll feel overwhelming UNT pride after reading the 60-page issue. We highlight staff and seven "North Star" faculty (pictured) who exhibit inspiring leadership in the classroom and put student success first, an alum working as a performance data scientist for the Houston Texans, those who served as literal lifesavers through organ donation, and the work of biomedical researchers creating medical devices to reshape people's lives.

The UNT community's important work and accomplishments are news beyond our university, including these recent mentions:

  • Dr. Courtney Cecale, assistant professor of anthropology, discussed Texas' brutally hot summers, the impacts of heat islands and climate change, and her North Texas Heat Research Project with NBC 5.
  • The Dallas Morning News profiled CVAD alumna Anila Quayyum Agha ('04 M.F.A.), a Pakistani-born artist who has her art on exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art through Jan. 9, 2022.
  • Dr. Jeff Chandler, assistant professor of management, spoke with the Texas Observer about the impact new Texas legislation may have on business relocations.
  • Art History Lecturer Monica Salazar discussed the ways lowrider cars represent a hybrid of American and Mexican culture with Al Día and The Dallas Morning News.
  • UNT has more than 5,000 trees on campus and Grounds Manager Kelly Frailey recently spoke with Denton County Magazine about UNT's commitment to our tree population.
  • The Daily Progress highlighted a paper published by UNT researchers Dr. Kevin Kim, Dr. Dan Kim, and Dr. Leon Kappelman that addresses the need for greater cybersecurity networks for U.S. businesses.
  • CBS DFW profiled alum Freddie Jones ('83) who is in his seventh season as the official trumpet player for the Dallas Cowboys. He plays the National Anthem at every home football game.
