Watch how UNT has transformed itself as a university of tomorrow in UNT's Path to Excellence.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

We've started the 2016-17 academic year with the wind at our backs.

For the second year in a row, we hit another enrollment record and welcomed our largest freshman class to date. Our new freshman class includes 11 new National Merit Finalists and other high-achieving students who are fueling our momentum as a first-choice institution.

This was the perfect way to kick off the 2016 State of the University, at which I highlighted our progress and laid out our priorities for the future that include helping our students succeed, building our research profile, strengthening our reputation and growing our support base of alumni and friends. That means finding new, better ways of having an impact and proving our value to our students, alumni and friends.

As a Carnegie-ranked top-tier research university, we are now part of an elite group of institutions and that changes how we must compete. I challenged our university community -- students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends -- to help us embrace change and innovation so that we're Tier One in everything we do, whether that's academics or athletics. Read a recap of the event, read my message to the university community and enjoy the videos we unveiled, including one called UNT's Path to Excellence that highlights our recent progress .

For 126 years and counting, UNT has helped shape the lives and dreams of hundreds of thousands of students and contributed to the progress of the North Texas region and state. As we focus on competing at the highest levels, our impact on the people, businesses and communities of the region, state and nation will grow stronger.

UNT Proud,

The Inside Scoop
University's highest honor
Norah Jones and Neal Smatresk
Music icon, Grammy-award winning artist and UNT alumna Norah Jones has made us extremely proud. I honored her impact on the music industry by giving her the Presidential Medal of Honor during her visit to UNT when she discussed the music business with our students. Ms. Jones, who was a jazz studies major, is a headliner for the Oaktopia Festival this weekend. We are proud to support the festival -- and alumni artists like Ms. Jones -- as a premier sponsor.

Game-changing research
Our researchers recently made game-changing breakthroughs in the fight against breast cancer and in materials design. Ron Mittler, a professor of biology, and Rachel Nechushtai, a professor at The Hebrew University and an adjunct professor of biology at UNT, identified a protein that's linked to tumor growth through their work in UNT's BioDiscovery Institute. Learn more about this breakthrough. Rajiv Mishra, a professor of materials science and engineering and director of UNT's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute, and post doctoral researcher Mageshwari Komarasamy developed a high strength and creep resistant alloy, which could change how materials are designed for power plants and engines. Learn more about their discovery.

To get you in the game day spirit, I'm giving away two pairs of tickets to any home game of the season. Email president@unt.edu by 5 p.m. Sept. 26 with "home game" in the subject line. Include your mailing address and T-shirt size. Join us for Family Weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and Homecoming Week Oct. 31-Nov. 5. Mark your calendars and buy your tickets. Go Mean Green!

Fighting mosquitoes

Mosquito hunter James Kennedy, Regents Professor of biology, and our graduate students are on the front lines of the battle against the West Nile and Zika viruses. They have tracked the mosquito populations in Denton for 12 years. Through our partnership with the city of Denton, we were the first to discover local West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes in North Texas. See the team of experts at work.

The buzz is out: UNT is Texas' first Bee Campus USA

UNT is the first university in Texas to be named a Bee Campus USA, meaning we've created a bee-friendly campus. Bee Campus USA is a sustainability organization focused on supporting pollinator species populations, which are declining rapidly across the globe. Find out what the buzz is all about.
