Dear UNT supporter,
It's a new year of opportunity at UNT! Our students returned to campus Monday, and we've implemented a radical friendliness campaign to help students navigate our campus and ask questions. The Divisions of Finance and Administration and Student Affairs partnered to set up seven "Ask Me" tents across campus where students can get directions and receive caring, thoughtful guidance on questions they may have. The first day on a new college campus can be overwhelming and we want to do our part to alleviate stress for our students and show how #UNTcares. Steve Cobb, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, has been doing his part to mitigate first day foibles for more than 20 years.
At UNT, we're focused on helping our students unlock their potential and achieve their dreams. As you'll see in our new video, nothing is out of reach at UNT. With a UNT education, each student will be prepared to rise to the challenges of a modern workforce and fuel the nation's creative economy.
This fall marks the opening of our Biomedical Engineering Building at Discovery Park, 1,000 additional parking spaces for commuter students at Fouts Field, and Joe Greene Hall, our newest housing option for 580 freshmen students. We look forward to hosting ribbon cutting ceremonies for the Biomedical Engineering Building and Joe Greene Hall later this week, and UNT Athletics' Lovelace and McNatt Families Practice Facility later this fall.
We started this academic year by working together on our strategic plan at my annual Planning Implementation Workshop, which was themed Collaborating for Student Success. Collaboration will be the most critical component to helping us achieve our stated goals and will be woven throughout our three focus areas — Student Empowerment and Transformation, People and Processes, and Scholarly Activity and Innovation. I'll discuss the strategic plan and our vision for the future at the State of the University, scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. You are welcome to attend and learn more about our path forward. Our strategic plan, along with our new mission, purpose and vision statements, will be presented to the UNT System Board of Regents in November.
Thank you for supporting UNT and for sharing Mean Green Pride with all you encounter. We anticipate 2019-20 will be another banner year for UNT, and we look forward to celebrating with you and our whole UNT family.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Frisco Freshman
Cohort |
|
As you know, we are constantly working to prepare our students to become the creative leaders of tomorrow. To ensure they carve an innovative path, we launched the Project Design Analysis Cohort this fall at UNT at Frisco. This video details not only the program, but how excited freshmen and their parents are to be a part of this trailblazing cohort. This integrative studies degree with a concentration in Project Design and Analysis will provide students with the experience and information they need to be career ready after graduation. Students in this first cohort, who are on track to graduate in three years, will work with Frisco-based companies, complete three paid internships, learn in a group environment and engage in project-driven curricula that could lead to industrial certifications. Together, we've reached a new level in 21st century education, and I can't wait to see how these students change the course of industry as disruptors and enablers.

Vice President for
Research and Innovation |
|
We are proud to welcome Mark R. McLellan to our UNT family as our new vice president for research and innovation. A 30-year leader of university research programs, Mark comes to us from Portland State University, where he has served as vice president of research and graduate studies since August 2018. There, he implemented several high-profile initiatives that resulted in a significant increase in external research grant funding. His start date is Sept. 16. Mark's leadership will be critical as our university solidifies our reputation as a Tier One research university, and I am grateful he has agreed to bring his extensive knowledge and expertise to UNT. He has vast experience in higher education and at major research institutions, and we have found him to be incredibly insightful and collaborative. I want to thank Narendra Dahotre, University Distinguished Research Professor in materials science and engineering, who has served tirelessly as interim vice president since February 2018. Narendra's efforts were critical and helped us secure $10 million in funding from the 86th Texas Legislature for UNT's Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing.

77 programs listed
among Top 100 |
|
Considering our top-notch faculty consistently provide students with a world-class education, it should come as no surprise that we now have even more degree programs ranked among the nation's top 100 — 77, up from 72. The newly ranked programs include our undergraduate degrees in marketing, finance, political science, economics, social sciences and psychology, as well as our online master's in special education. Our programs make a widespread impression because of our commitment to providing students with cutting-edge degree options and our responsiveness to marketplace needs, as evidenced by the six new degrees we now offer. Beginning this fall, undergraduates can now earn Bachelor of Arts degrees in Latino culture, economy and policy and in urban policy and planning, and Bachelor of Science degrees in general business and data science. In addition, we're offering a Master of Arts degree in applied behavior analysis and a Master's of Business Administration degree in business analytics. I am proud of the way UNT continues to grow and am excited to see what these new degree programs will help our students accomplish.

UNT experts weigh in on the historical
events of 1969 in podcast |
|
Fifty years ago, a tidal wave of history crashed through the American consciousness. First came the Stonewall Riots, demonstrations by the LGBTQ+ community against police raids that are often viewed as some of the most important milestones for the early gay rights movement. Then, there was the Apollo 11 space launch, in which the first men achieved the unthinkable by stepping foot on the moon. Just a few weeks later, more than 400,000 people trekked to a 600-acre dairy farm in upstate New York for memorable musical performances known as Woodstock. If you want to hear more about these society-shaking events, check out the latest episode of UNT Pod, which brought together several of our UNT experts — including astronomy laboratory director Ron Diiulio, former creative writing associate professor Ann McCutchan, music librarian Sara Outhier, and associate professors Suzanne Enck and Clark Pomerleau — to explore the reverberations of these movements on the U.S. then and now, and what lessons we can continue to take away from these important milestones 50 years later. |
