At 18-3, the men's basketball team continues to play smart, work hard and win games. |

Dear Alum,
After an incredible 2018 where UNT set records in every measurable metric — including enrollment, graduates, degrees awarded, National Merit Finalists, university and athletic fundraising, and research expenditures – we're off to a great start this spring. The North Texan President's Report highlights the many ways UNT soared higher in 2018. Our status as a Tier One research university, the highest designation given to research universities, was reaffirmed by the Carnegie Classification, construction on our new tour center is wrapping up and our men's basketball team is on fire, currently 18-3.
We will spend this year making thoughtful, long-term plans for our future. In addition to improving our brand and market position, we will develop our aspirational strategic plan that enables UNT to grow and thrive as we move forward through improved national rankings, a focus on student success and growing collaborative research. We can't wait to share the results with you this fall.
Our mission is to support our students in a caring and creative community that prepares them for careers in a rapidly changing world, and I couldn't help but recruit our newest student earlier this month. I was at the Frisco City Council meeting to give an update on our Frisco campus when I met 9-year-old Prince Nallamothula, winner of "Most Outstanding Presentation" at the Chicago Toy and Game Fair's Young Inventor Challenge. Prince is a bright, intelligent and motivated young man — exactly the kind of student we want studying at UNT and representing our university. Knowing that UNT is a place where Prince can soar, I offered him a full scholarship right on the spot.
2019 will be a year of excitement, new opportunities and continued excellence. Because of supporters like you, UNT is a university that produces the creative leaders of tomorrow. Thanks for all you do, Mean Green family.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk
President

Advocating in Austin |
|
Alumni, students and friends of the university are headed to Austin Feb. 13 to meet with legislators in the Texas State Capitol. During UNT Day at the Capitol, we will build relationships with elected officials and promote issues that are key to UNT's health and growth, including funding to grow our additive manufacturing research capabilities, autism research and other initiatives. While we're down in Austin, the Alumni Association will host an Austin Chapter Presidential Celebration on Feb. 12 at the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin, where I look forward to catching up with our alumni in the capital city and surrounding areas. Get your tickets for the Feb. 12 event now!

PGA of America partnership |
|
We constantly assess the many ways we can offer students unparalleled opportunities for career exploration and forge partnerships with leading businesses and organizations willing to let our students complete class projects, internships and more. In December, we added another leading sport organization to our portfolio by declaring our intent to work with the Professional Golfers' Association of America on education, research and branding initiatives. The PGA of America is relocating its headquarters to Frisco, the home of UNT's Frisco campus and a hotbed of sport entertainment, and I anticipate this will provide new academic and hands-on experiences for students interested in working in the sport and entertainment industries.

UNT will host the US-China Smart Education Conference March 18-20 and bring together hundreds of global thought leaders, technology experts, industry leaders and educators to discuss educational technology and how it can best be used to enhance student learning experiences and outcomes. Conference keynote speakers include NetDragon Chairman and founder Deijian Liu and Stephen Attenborough, chief commercial officer for Virgin Galactic. As part of the fourth annual conference, UNT will host a pitch competition – Ed Tech Ascend – inspired by the hit show Shark Tank® to encourage creative individuals and teams from the educational technology industry to "sell" their product vision to judges, companies and potential investors. Partnership with UNT Health Science Center helps
prepare doctors for service in rural areas |
|
We're focused on partnerships that provide our students with greater opportunities, positively impacting our students and the greater world. We've welcomed four students from the Primary Care Pathway Program to our campus for a year, knowing that medical school is their next stop. Micah Bigby, Diana Garcia Garcia, Clarence Sparks and Cayden Martinez (pictured from left) are all part of the program, a collaboration between Midland College, UNT and the UNT Health Science Center. The program finds potential doctors in rural areas and fast tracks them through medical school. They will return to Midland-Odessa for their residencies and provide much needed care to folks in West Texas.
