UNT Business Leadership Building
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

Happy 2022! While the new year is a time to look to the future and reflect on key aspirations, that's a year-round focus here at UNT. That's particularly true when it comes to readying our students for the ever-evolving professional landscape, ensuring they are prepared to secure — and excel in — the career of their dreams.

To further bolster our commitment to that objective, we recently welcomed Eileen Buecher as our new assistant vice president for Student Affairs in Career and Leadership. Eileen — who has more than 30 years of experience leading career centers at colleges and universities across the country and currently serves as the executive director of the Career Center at California Polytechnic State University — will work to better strengthen the resources for career across our campus.

As outlined in my Fall 2021 State of the University address, UNT also is embedding 30 career coaches directly into our colleges to provide one-on-one and group coaching to students, help faculty incorporate career and professional development into curricula, and help students secure internships and jobs at graduation. Additionally, alumnus Wilson Jones ('85) — the former president and CEO of Oshkosh Corporation — and his wife, Jane, have generously gifted $5 million to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business to create The Wilson Jones Career Center. The newly established center will have a direct effect on the business leaders of tomorrow within the career and graduation process, with a focus on internship opportunities and more adequate and accessible support for career readiness.

These initiatives, along with several others we have launched over the past year, will ensure all students graduate with the skills necessary to help them succeed in their first job out of college and beyond. As always, I am excited to see what great things lie ahead for our caring, creative UNT community, as we usher in students for a new semester.

UNT Proud,

The Inside Scoop
Helping
America's team
Two of our talented UNT administrators scored major coverage for their success in helping the Dallas Cowboys increase player engagement during virtual meetings. As detailed in The Wall Street Journal and The Dallas Morning News, the team's current success in the digital space is due in large part to the guidance of Adam Fein and Ruthanne "Rudi" Thompson, who serve as vice president and associate vice president of UNT's Division of Digital Strategy and Innovation, respectively. In April, the two visited the Ford Center to deliver a 10-point presentation full of tips, tricks and techniques for virtual learning to Cowboys coaches. The meeting, which was supposed to last an hour, ran closer to 90 minutes — and Adam and Rudi's innovative approach to digital learning laid the groundwork for the Cowboys' offseason program and head coach Mike McCarthy's confidence in the virtual meeting format as part of the team's continued COVID-19 protocols.

Spanish-language
welcome website
I'm thrilled to announce the launch of our new Spanish-language welcome website, Bienvenido a UNT. As part of our commitment as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, the site was created to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking families and communities about our resources, programs and research, as well as our creative, caring spirit. The new website even allows prospective students and their families to book a tour and reach out to Spanish-speaking financial aid and admissions counselors.

Vice presidents soar to new opportunities

The new year brings change to the senior leadership team as our vice presidents for academic affairs, research and innovation, and university advancement have announced new opportunities beyond UNT. Two-time UNT alumna Dr. Jennifer Evans-Cowley was named last week as sole finalist for the University of Texas-Arlington (UTA) presidency. Dr. Cowley has served more than four years as UNT's vice president for academic affairs, and this is an exciting and well-deserved opportunity for her. Alumnus Dr. David Wolf, vice president for university advancement, announced he is leaving his post, and Vice President for Research and Innovation Dr. Mark McLellan announced his intent to retire in June. All three individuals have been valued members of our Cabinet, and I cannot thank them enough for their service to UNT. They will always be a part of our Mean Green Family, and I look forward to welcoming new leaders to these top positions as the year progresses.

Great discussions to flow at new research event

Here at UNT, we're always ready to toast great research — and now the Division of Research and Innovation is taking that idea to the (literal) next level with its new event, Research on Tap. A partnership with alum-owned and Denton-based Armadillo Ale Works, the first of these relaxed discussions about current hot topics that tie to the research endeavors of our professors will take place Jan. 20 and feature Terry Pohlen, associate dean of the G. Brint Ryan College of Business, director of UNT's Jim McNatt Institute for Logistics Research and co-director of the Center for Integrated Intelligent Mobility Systems (CIIMS). Terry's talk will center on potential solutions for the current supply chain crisis, projected economic development in the DFW area over the next 20 years, and how his cutting-edge work with NASA and autonomous vehicles could improve lives. "I envision an autonomous truck backing up to a warehouse and unloaded by robots," Terry says. "Another set of robots will pick up the goods, with humans doing value-added activities, and then another loads them into an autonomous truck or drones will pick up the goods and deliver them to your home." Grab a coffee or craft beer for Terry's thought-provoking talk — Where's My Stuff? DFW Supply Chains, Logistics, and Research — and look for more Research on Tap events in the coming months.

Mean Green Athletics sees unprecedented success

Be sure to cheer on our amazing Mean Green men's and women's basketball teams on the court this season – they're ready to make history once again. In fact, our hard-working student-athletes are shattering records in the classroom as well, having just posted their highest Graduation Success Rate yet with a score of 87. The women's golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball teams had perfect scores of 100, and swimming and diving (97) and football (83) saw program bests. At UNT, the GSR — which measures the academic success of NCAA Division I student-athletes — has risen 28 percentage points since the first data collected for the 1995-98 cohort. And those aren't the only gains we've made recently, as Mean Green volleyball just welcomed new head coach Kristee Porter, who served as the head women's volleyball coach at McNeese State the past two years and was a four-time All-American at UCLA. All of these many successes and additions continue to propel us forward, leading to great things like our recent acceptance into the American Athletic Conference. I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes and coaches, and I hope you show your Mean Green pride too by supporting them at their upcoming games.

Speakers 'Create the Change' with TEDxUNT talks

In October, student musicians and 11 of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni took the stage to offer their unique insights into society-shaking topics — and the majority of their talks and performances can be viewed online. The discussions ranged from Dr. Cassini Nazir's exploration of curiosity as an innovation and Dr. Melanie Ecker's investigation into smart uses for plastics to Corrine Boyd's ideas for women in leadership and Reagan Kremer's (pictured) deeply personal story detailing the criminalization of the mentally ill. I was impressed and moved by our UNT community's perspectives on many important and timely topics, and I'm sure you will be too. You can watch the videos at tedxunt.org, and keep an eye out for more information about our 2022 event.
