Impacting First-Generation Families
More than 40% of UNT's undergraduate students identify as first generation. Supporting these students and their families continues to be a top priority for our institution. To increase this support, the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) awarded the First-Generation Success Center a $5,000 grant to support the center's ongoing efforts in building first-generation student-centered programming. The grant is the second from TIAA and part of a larger grant donation that included UNT's Student Veteran Services and programs within the Office of Outreach. Read about how the grant will support first-generation college students at UNT. |

Dear UNT supporter,
Happy 2024! With a new year comes the promise of new beginnings, a chance to improve ourselves and the lives of those around us. In 2023, UNT achieved great successes — record enrollment, the passing of the Texas University Fund (TUF), our first year in the American Athletic Conference, the newly named DATCU Stadium, and two new career centers, just to name a few. This year brings even more opportunities to continue our journey as a world-class university, one where students feel welcome, receive a top-notch education, and are fully prepared to enter our dynamic, exciting workforce.
We are so glad to have our students back on campus for Spring 2024. It always energizes me to see our bustling campus full of students rushing to class, heading to the Union for a bite or studying outside (when the weather permits!) Our faculty and staff have been hard at work preparing curriculum and freshening up facilities that will support our students' success.
One year ago, we officially announced our Shared Values, and while they are not new for us, we set out to live them with more intention and let them guide us as we do business as an institution of higher education. They will continue to be our North Star as we begin this new year.
2024 will be an exciting year for UNT, and I can't wait to share our achievements with you. As always, I am deeply grateful for your continued support of our Mean Green Family. It truly makes a difference.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk
President

Star Award |

UNT's ELEVAR program earned a 2023 Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The inclusive post-secondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities is the first of its kind at a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the country and one of the most inclusive in the nation, according to the Think College Coordinating Center. Dr. Brenda Barrio, ELEVAR co-founder and assistant vice president for research and innovation, says a few years ago, pursuing higher education and getting the support needed to succeed "was unknown or unheard of for individuals with intellectual disability, but UNT and other programs across the nation are making it possible."

Making History |
|
In December, we celebrated our Fall 2023 graduates, the newest members of the UNT alumni family. Students from all walks of life, many different states and countries, with degrees from many different programs, walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Read the stories of several graduates who overcame adversity and achieved success in our Great Grads series, including Minnie Payne, who at age 90, made history as the oldest individual to complete her coursework to earn a master's degree at UNT. Minnie earned her undergraduate degree from Texas Woman's University at age 73, and after crossing the stage during UNT's commencement ceremony, her journey is not over. "In some way or another, I want to continue learning."
We are #UNTproud of all our Mean Green graduates!
