Downtown Denton at night
You'll see your favorite spots and the community's many sides in our newest video, Denton: Where Creativity, Caring and Culture Thrive. No matter where you roam in Denton, you'll find friendly faces, feel at home and know that you've found where you belong.
Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

This summer has been fun-filled as we welcome thousands of new students to campus and the city of Denton for orientation. The program gives students and families an opportunity to talk with college or school faculty and staff, meet new friends, hear from current students, register for classes and learn about UNT traditions.

Emma and Kathy Earhart on the UNT campusTwo of our newest students are proving that age is only a number. As profiled by NBCDFW, FOX 4 and CBSDFW, 16-year-old Emma Earhart and her mother, Kathy, transferred from North Central Texas College and enrolled as biology majors in the UNT College of Science — the first step to achieving their shared dream of becoming medical doctors.

Also at orientation, students get a taste of Denton, which is continually named one of the Best College Towns in America. As you'll see in our newest video, Denton: Where Creativity, Caring and Culture Thrive, no matter where you roam in Denton, you'll find friendly faces, feel at home and know that you've found where you belong.

As summer winds down and you make plans for the fall, I hope Denton will be on your list of weekend destinations. Take your friends and family to your favorite spots and explore dozens of alumni-owned restaurants, bars and businesses. In addition to Mean Green gamedays, Denton offers festivals and outdoor activities sure to spark your interest. Plan to join us for Homecoming Nov. 1-2 for the annual bonfire, parade and football game against UTEP.

The Inside Scoop
Broadcast student
crowned Miss Texas
Chandler Foreman
We're proud to have senior Chandler Foreman representing UNT and our state as the newly crowned Miss Texas 2019. Chandler embodies the UNT spirit of dedication, tenacity, compassion and artistic creativity as a flutist. She told a packed audience at the Miss Texas competition that growing up, she never felt that she "was enough" because of the gap in her teeth, her hair texture and the color of her skin. Through perseverance, she learned to embrace her uniqueness and now empowers children to do the same. Chandler, who plans to become a television anchor and serve as a life coach for teens, already has launched a nonprofit called Kween to Queen. Chandler will compete for the Miss America 2020 title Dec. 19 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. The pageant will be broadcast on NBC, and the Mean Green nation will be cheering her on!

New Coliseum court
2019 UNT basketball court design
The hardwood at the Super Pit will showcase a new design this season after fans voted for their favorite of three options presented by North Texas Athletics online and via social media. More than 6,500 votes were cast, and the Diving Eagle design, pictured above, received nearly 54 percent of the total vote. The other options available featured the UNT Battle Flag and McConnell Tower. Both teams recorded their second-straight winning season last year, and we look forward to continued Mean Green momentum this season.

Spotlight on Excellence
April Becker
Behavior analyst wins distinguished Powe award

Using technology to reimagine research on behaviors exhibited before and after a stroke helped April Becker, assistant professor of behavioral analysis, earn the 2019 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. This significant honor is among the most prestigious for professors teaching engineering, science, mathematics, policy management and education. Dr. Becker is the 12th UNT faculty member to receive the award since 1991, and we look forward to seeing what her research can do for the treatment of stroke victims.

Chris Lee, former UNT student regent and VP for SGA proposing to his girlfriend, Karen Alday
Finding love at UNT

While running across the pedestrian bridge during a jog with Karen Alday ('16), Chris Lee ('17) realized she wasn't just a girlfriend – she was "the one." Earlier this month, Chris, a former UNT System student regent and vice president of UNT's Student Government Association, called on friends at the UNT Alumni Association to invite the pair to a "fake" event so they could return to campus and he could pop the question, as detailed in The North Texan. Are you among the Mean Green and married? If so, send your story to president@unt.edu for the possibility to be featured in future editions of The North Texan or on UNT's social media channels.
