UNT campus
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

Summertime has arrived in Denton, albeit a bit rainy, and campus preparations are underway for a full university experience this fall. Facilities teams are resetting furniture in classrooms, motivated students are hard at work in summer courses, and on-campus orientation sessions are in full swing for the Mean Green family's newest members. It's exciting to witness our new students' excitement for UNT, and I know their diverse perspectives will strengthen our UNT community. (If you know of any motivated, bright students who would be a great fit for UNT, encourage them to schedule a campus tour and apply!)

I look forward to an exciting fall semester complete with events and programs for students, alumni, and the Mean Green community. The Mean Green football schedule is out, and we'll soon share dates and details about alumni events and engagement opportunities, including Family Weekend and Homecoming. (If you would like to join us for game day at Apogee Stadium this fall, don't wait to get your football season tickets!

After an unusual year with little travel, I wish you a safe, enjoyable summer with opportunities to reconnect with family and friends. If your travels bring you to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, please know you are always welcome to drop by campus to observe our progress and reflect on the spots most important to you. Long after you leave the nest, UNT will always be your home.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Tier One
Recognition
UNT's attainment of Tier One research university status from the Carnegie Classification is included as one of the top 50 achievements in the region in the North Texas Commission's 50 for 50 campaign. The campaign celebrates the 50th anniversary of the commission, which was chartered in 1971 to market the North Texas region. The accolade acknowledges the significant investment UNT made to join the ranks of the top research universities in the nation in 2015 and continues to make as it increases its research productivity — all while increasing diversity and maintaining the consistently high-quality education that serves students from North Texas and around the world.

Heart defect treatment for preemies

Funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Ed Dzialowski, professor of biological sciences and associate dean for research and graduate studies, and his research team are studying the fetal artery that allows blood to detour away from the lungs before birth. The artery — the ductus arteriosus — closes shortly after birth in healthy, full-term newborns, but it often doesn't close in infants born prematurely, which requires medical intervention and possibly surgery. Dr. Dzialowski and his team are studying the development of chickens in their eggs to understand the cellular pathways involved in the artery's closing and hope to find an alternative treatment to surgery.

Golfers clinch championship

The Mean Green women's golf team won the inaugural Let Them Play Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona. The tournament was organized on the fly by Barstool Sports' Sam "Riggs" Bozoian after the NCAA Regional was canceled due to course conditions. The tournament featured 10 of the 12 teams whose seasons were ended unexpectedly by the NCAA Regional cancelation and the UNT golf team flourished, winning with a score of 11-under par. Junior Audrey Tan, who won the individual championship at the Conference USA tournament, repeated the feat with a score of 9-under par. Congratulations to our golfers for an incredible end to the season!
