Large-scale artworks by Dornith Doherty, University Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Studio Art, are on display through June 30 at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden's Madeline R. Samples Exhibit Hall. The exhibition, Dornith Doherty: Illuminations: Past, Present, and Future of Fern Research, includes large-scale transparencies made from diaphanized plants that were collected in 1956, artworks made from images of ferns that were recently discovered in Colombia, and a projection of animated genomic data from these plants. The exhibition hall is in the Botanic Research Institute of Texas building at 1700 University Drive in Fort Worth. Dear UNT supporter,
Depending on where you live, you likely are enjoying warmer weather, taking a much-needed vacation, or trying to keep your kids entertained and busy while they're on summer break. Here at UNT, we're still proudly reminiscing about the commencement ceremonies that happened last month, missing our graduates but excited for what their future holds.
Our 2023 summer session started June 5, and while campus is not as bustling as it will be in the fall, it's great to see students taking classes and enjoying all their campus has to offer, including the many activities happening in the surrounding community. We also are preparing to welcome our students this fall. Facilities is hard at work prepping buildings and classrooms, and on-campus orientations for our newest Mean Green Family members are in full swing. This time of year is always exciting as we rest, refresh, and prepare for the new faces that will soon be here at UNT. Our students' enthusiasm is palpable, and I'm encouraged by their fresh perspectives, new ideas, and unique personalities that will continue to strengthen our great university. If you know any motivated and bright students who would be a great fit in our community, encourage them to schedule a campus tour and apply!
Our fall calendar is already filling up, including our Mean Green football schedule. I'm excited for our first season in the American Athletic Conference and can't wait to cheer them on. I hope you'll join me so don't wait to get your tickets to a game or two!
I hope you're enjoying your summer so far and wish you safe travel for any vacations or trips you may be planning. I encourage you to use this time to reconnect with family and friends and celebrate special moments together. If you're heading to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, come home for a visit to our campus and relive some of the memories from your time here. Near or far, however long ago you attended UNT, you are always welcome home.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Connection Through Music |
|
Dr. Vivek Virani, assistant professor of ethnomusicology and music theory, discusses the universality of music and spiritual practices around the world in the latest episode of The Lab. "Every culture has such a different idea about what divinity is," he says. "Despite all these differences, there's a lot of incredible commonalities in the kinds of experiences that we as human beings find valuable and the kind of experiences that we try to bring into our lives through music and through religion."
