Commencement's a Wrap
Our newest Eagle graduates were celebrated in 14 ceremonies in May, which also marked the last commencement for President Smatresk. He told the crowd at the final doctoral/master's ceremony that it was a bittersweet moment, especially since he hasn't missed a graduation since 1990.
His final message to the graduates? "We hope that we've prepared you to be problem solvers. We hope that we've prepared you to be leaders. We hope that we've prepared you to make the world a better place, and you're going to do that, and not just because you've learned a lot — lots of people learn a lot," he said. "What I hope most of all is that the caring nature of this institution, our spirit of inclusivity, our spirit of taking care of each and every one of you, carries through in what you do. ... Care about the future. Care about the people around you. Care about each other. Care about your families. If you do that, you're going to succeed wildly."
The president took the selfie above. Be sure and catch the president's interview on our podcast, Happy Friday, North Texas!: "Gettin' Real with Neal." |

Straight from Smatresk |
Dear UNT supporter,
We recently wrapped up a busy spring semester, and the heat of summer is upon us in Texas! Our students are focused on summer sessions on campus, while others are taking a much-needed rest for summer break. Now that we have a moment to catch our breath, let's recap some of the highlights of this past semester!
As you may have heard, a sole finalist for the next UNT president was announced at the June 7 UNT System Board of Regents session. Dr. Harrison Keller is set to become the 17th president in the university's history and has served most recently as commissioner and chief executive officer of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Dr. Keller has spent his career committed to improving higher education in Texas, and I am excited and confident he will propel UNT to even greater prominence and continue serving our students and shaping them to become the leaders of tomorrow.
I hope you all are enjoying your summer and have a chance to rest and unwind before the hustle of a new school year begins. Share your summer plans with me by tagging me on X at @UNTPrez! I, myself, am looking forward to some time with my family and friends.
Thank you for your commitment to this university.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk
President

Bee Box Buzz |
|
With a grant from the We Mean Green Fund, students are improving the ecosystem at UNT one bee box at a time. The boxes are intended to help nurture native bees and their vital role as pollinators, and they tie in with our Bee Campus USA designation. You can listen to the students describe it in the "Earth and Taxes" episode (12:50 mark) of Happy Friday, North Texas! In case you're wondering, they also let us know that native solitary bee species are much more laid back than honeybees. They don't sting in retaliation and they're smaller — you may not even know you've seen one!
