UNT Commencmeent Spring 2021
Straight from Smatresk

Dear UNT supporter,

I had the pleasure of conferring more than 5,800 degrees last weekend during our Spring 2021 Commencement ceremonies, and I couldn't stop smiling. Our newest graduates were determined to overcome a pandemic in pursuit of their degrees and are well on their way to achieving ambitious dreams.

In the most extraordinary time in the history of higher education, our UNT community pulled together to ensure our students were able to pursue their dreams — just as we have for the past 130 years. Through the incredible efforts of our faculty and staff, we offered more classes to more students, brought new majors to the forefront, saw our graduate education programs swell along with our national and international reputation, and helped our students' success through focused strategic efforts around affordability. We also continue our efforts to fight racism and create a more diverse and equitable campus.

Signs of the Mean Green spirit were alive and well as our students achieved accolades you'll read about below, and we implemented strategic initiatives to best achieve our mission of empowering students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

As I look back over the past year, I have an enormous sense of pride in the accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff, who have shown our resilient caring nature like never before. I hope we continue to make each of our alums and UNT supporters unequivocally proud.

I wish everyone a rich and rewarding summer as we prepare for a full university experience this fall with in-person classes and engaging events for our entire community. We look forward to welcoming our entire UNT family home.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
UNT Food Pantry Presented
by Kroger
We can better help our students fight food insecurity thanks to a five-year, $250,000 commitment from Kroger Co., which is part of the Kroger Zero Hunger Zero Waste commitment. The added support to the UNT Food Pantry Presented by Kroger will help ensure the shelves remain stocked and the pantry can employ two student workers to assist with inventory, volunteer management, and the online order system put in place during the pandemic. Thanks to Kroger, this will benefit our students for years to come.

Spotlight on Excellence
UNT's RE-PLAN technology commercialized, used for COVID-19 vaccine distribution

The cloud-based RE-PLAN computer program developed at UNT now is being commercialized through a collaboration with Juvare, a leader in critical incident preparedness and response technology. As this video showcases, RE-PLAN helps state and local public health agencies distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to ensure timely availability to all community members, including vulnerable and at-risk populations such as those who lack transportation, need translators, have special needs related to disabilities, or are uninsured. Originally designed to create emergency response plans for bioterrorism events, the program was adapted to focus on decision support for COVID-19 mass vaccination planning by a team of researchers led by Dr. Marty O'Neill, director of UNT's Center for Computational Epidemiology and Response Analysis.

Spring graduate wins Truman Scholarship, will pursue career in public service

Spring 2021 political science and economics graduate Hillary Shah won the 2021 Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a premier graduate scholarship from the Truman Scholarship Foundation for college students pursuing careers in public service. The daughter of Indian immigrants, Hillary is one of 62 students in the U.S. selected this year for the scholarship, which Congress established as an official federal memorial to the nation's 33rd president. Hillary has an extensive record of public and community service, and cares deeply about advocating and empowering marginalized communities such as people of color, people living in poverty, felons, and others. Congratulations, Hillary!

Hope Trautwein
Huge wins for Mean Green student-athletes

In case you missed it, the Mean Green have been on fire this spring! Softball pitcher Hope Trautwein became the first pitcher in NCAA Division I history to throw a perfect seven-inning game in which all 21 outs were strikeouts. The December 2020 accounting graduate is pursuing her M.B.A. and was mentioned by hundreds of media organizations including ABC News, CBS Sports, MLB Central, NPR, the Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, MLB Network, WFAA, The Dallas Morning News, and the Texas Standard, where you can learn more about her softball journey, teammates, and role models. UNT's golf teams also are having impressive seasons, with the women's team winning its first-ever team conference championship and UNT freshman Vicente Marzilio winning the Conference USA men's golf individual championship. We're also happy to see our students advancing into professional sports, with wide receiver Jaelon Darden selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL Draft's fourth round Saturday. He became the first Mean Green player drafted since linebacker Cody Spencer in 2004. The Bucs traded picks with Seattle to move up in the round to get Darden, who ranked among the nation's leaders in major receiving categories. Way to go, Mean Green!

UNT ELEVAR welcomes to campus young adults with intellectual disabilities

UNT will debut a new four-year inclusive postsecondary education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities this fall, just the second such program in Texas and the first in the North Texas region. UNT ELEVAR — Empower, Learn, Excel, enVision, Advance, Rise — will provide educational training to help the students pursue a meaningful career and skills to lead an independent life. As chronicled by NBCDFW, UNT ELEVAR also will create a transition pathway by partnering with local districts to mentor and support high school students with intellectual disabilities. Seed funding comes from a nearly $2 million U.S. Department of Education grant. You don't want to miss this video of Lucas, one of our inaugural students, opening his UNT acceptance letter!
