Dear UNT supporter,

The spring semester has flown by, and I am excited to report that another 6,700 students celebrated the completion of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees during commencement ceremonies this past weekend! These milestones for our students make me so proud of all the work we've done to create a strong, caring community for our students that prepares them for an evolving workforce.

This May, I also am proud — and incredibly humbled — by the generosity of our alumni, faculty, staff and others who participated in our inaugural UNT Day of Giving. In our "1890 Minutes to Soar," we managed to raise more than $425,000 to put toward our emergency student fund, scholarships and so many other priority initiatives alums like you are passionate about. Simply amazing!

As we move toward the fall semester, we continue to look forward to even larger enrollment for the 2023-24 academic year. This would mark our fifth-consecutive record-breaking fall enrollment as we continue to defy state and national trends of decreasing enrollments. The word is clearly out that UNT is a top university, not only in North Texas, but the state and our nation. In fact, UNT increased its standing in the latest round of U.S. News & World Report rankings, taking the top Texas spot for three of the programs evaluated.

As the fastest-growing university in Texas, we are committed to helping our students start their journey and support them throughout and beyond their time here. There's a buzz around our campus as students take advantage of the warmer weather and many are taking graduation photos on our beautiful campus. Their smiles take me back to my college days and my own excitement — and the occasional anxiety — for what was ahead after I graduated. With our supportive faculty and staff, as well as our strong alumni network, I know they can be assured we will be there for them well into the future.

As we cross the finish line for spring semester this year, I am continually proud of our university community. We work through challenges and celebrate successes, all while focusing on our commitment to ensure UNT remains a caring, creative, and thriving institution for our students.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

Training Mental Health
Workers in Schools
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced that UNT has been awarded a federal grant of $440,306 to train school counselors, social workers, psychologists or other mental health professionals qualified to provide school-based mental health services. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Education's Mental Health Service Professionals Demonstration Program, authorized by Cornyn's Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that was signed into law last year after the Uvalde school shooting. The legislation addresses specific concerns that have led to recent mass shootings, including the need for additional mental health services and school safety resources.

The award honors the late Dr. Combes, who also was a dedicated educator and supporter of our students and UNT.

Spotlight on Excellence
The Lab

Our innovative research programs at UNT further solidify our status as a Carnegie-ranked Tier One research university. We recently launched a YouTube series to share information about the ground-breaking work our researchers and professors are doing to impact the lives of people, business, and culture. Check out the latest installment of The Lab. Dr. Xiao Li, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, discusses her research on liquid crystal design and how it could be used to more effectively clean up oil spills to limit environmental damage. Be sure to subscribe to the UNT YouTube channel to watch all the great content, including the entire series of The Lab.

Mean Green Sports

A Denton Mean Green firetruck was unveiled last week at a victory celebration honoring our Mean Green women's golf team for winning their last three C-USA championships, men's polo team for capturing their first National Intercollegiate Championship and our men's basketball team, who won their first-ever NIT title and finished the season with a 31-7 record — the most single-season wins in program history. The NIT basketball champs are pictured in front of the truck with alumna and longtime Denton resident Diann Rozell Huber, the donor who helped make it possible. The firetruck was bought by the city of Denton, and the Mean Green upgrades were supported by a gift from Huber in honor of her sons and their families and with gratitude to the Denton community. Special features include the words "Mean Green" that light up on the front and back bumpers, a UNT Battle Flag design on the front grille and a horn system that can play the fight song! Get a better look at the truck and celebration in photos and video from Athletics. (Photo by Zach Del Bello)
