Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

In January, the University of North Texas' New College at Frisco will open to offer its first classes, providing a new way of thinking, a new way of doing business and a new kind of education to students.

President Neal SmatreskThe New College is scheduled to open Jan. 19, and I have been sharing this great news with key partners, most recently with the Frisco Rotary Club (left). UNT's New College is a laboratory of ideas that offers new ways of learning and helps students be collaborative, bold and cutting edge.

Located in the heart of Frisco's business district, the New College is another essential way that we are meeting the workforce needs of the growing region, which is home to Fortune 1,000 companies such as Frito-Lay and the soon-to-be relocated Toyota headquarters located nearby. We are providing site-directed education and career development based on what industry leaders are telling us they want from today's professionals.

UNT Frisco CampusI'm excited about this giant leap forward, which will expand our reach in one of the nation's fastest-growing areas. In 10 years, we envision the New College serving as many as 5,000 to 10,000 students and helping UNT to remain a leader in producing graduates for industry and business.

As alumni and friends, I hope you're excited and proud about how UNT is bringing innovation and more convenience to the power of a UNT education.

UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
TAMS
Colleen Dai, Shoshana Zhang and Amber Lu
Students named regional finalists in Siemens Competition

The breakthrough research of TAMS students Colleen Dai, Shoshana Zhang and Amber Lu (from left) earned them each a spot as a regional finalist in the 2015 Siemens Competition, and landed UNT as the school in Texas with the most regional finalists and semifinalists. Amber's research involves using matrices to model hypergraphs, work that has applications in social networking integrated circuits and neurological modeling. Colleen and Shoshana use computational and organic chemistry research to find safer alternatives to the common carcinogenic and toxic substances used in industrial settings. Congrats to these bright and talented students!

Alumnus gives $1.9 million to arts, athletics, academics

We have great alumni supporters who show their deep pride and gratitude to UNT and to our mission. Alumnus Jerome 'Bruzzy' Westheimer ('65) joins recent alumni who are paying it forward through their generous gifts to strengthen UNT and help our students achieve their dreams. Mr. Westheimer gave more than $1.9 million to support the Mean Green Athletics golf program, the College of Music, the College of Visual Arts and Design, a commissioned sculpture by the late artist and UNT alumnus Jesús Moroles ('78) and the UNT Kuehne Speaker Series, programs he's passionate about seeing flourish. I'm excited about how strong alumni support is helping to elevate UNT.

Dr. Guido Verbeck and M. Navid Dorreyatim
Air quality testing goes mobile
UNT researcher Guido Verbeck (right), associate professor of chemistry, has developed a new portable tool that will help environmental scientists and crime investigators more readily collect air quality data on the spot, in real time. Typically, scientists have used mass spectrometers that required them to revisit crime scenes. Dr. Verbeck's new mobile tool, which checks air quality and provides a list of chemicals in the air, is a less costly option for researchers on a budget and on the go. Read why Dr. Verbeck is taking his research on the road to Chile.
UNT women's basketball
Cheer on Mean Green hoops

Let's keep cheering on Mean Green basketball to more wins this season. Our men's team is off to a 2-0 start, averaging 111 points per game. And new women's head coach and alum Jalie Mitchell ('02) became the first women's basketball coach in school history to defeat a ranked opponent, beating No. 17 Oklahoma this week. So that you can get in on our hoops action, I'm giving away two pairs of tickets to any men's home game and two pairs of tickets to any women's home game. Email president@unt.edu by Nov. 30 to be entered into the random drawing. Go Mean Green! Check out the men's and women's schedules.

Carnae Dillard
Student-athletes at the top of their game

Mean Green volleyball player and senior Carnae Dillard -- Conference USA Player of the Year -- was recently named ESPNW Player of the Week and featured in The North Texan online, where she shared her passion for kinesiology and playing volleyball. She credits her supportive coaches, family of teammates and caring professors for helping make her time at UNT exceptional. Carnae has an incredible story, and I want to send a special congrats to her for excelling as a student-athlete. Congratulations also to our Mean Green women's soccer team, the regular season and Conference USA tournament champs, who made an appearance in the NCAA postseason tournament!
