Straight from Smatresk

Dear Alum,

I cannot stress enough the transformational power of higher education, and many of you know this firsthand as alumni. It's why we've committed to building a stronger UNT.

At the inaugural State of the University Sept. 17, I shared UNT's top priorities for this year and for the next two years. Our focus is to continue to improve our operations and efficiency, increase revenue and build stronger academic support systems. As alumni and friends, you'll notice the changes because our actions will improve how we support students and our communities.

We all have a stake in UNT. I hope you will share your dreams for UNT and your thoughts on what the world expects from us on our Dream Catcher webpage or with me on Twitter @UNTPrez, using the hashtags #UNTDreams and #UNTExpectations. We'll use your feedback to help take UNT to the next level.

Our ambitions are high and it will take all of us working together to help UNT change for the better.

Mean Green pride is infectious. I also hope to see you cheering for the Mean Green during football season as our Heart of Dallas Bowl champions go for another winning season. And don't forget to join us at Apogee Stadium for Homecoming Nov. 8. Let there be green!

UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk

The Inside Scoop
Pursuit of excellence
President Smatresk and Lee Jackson
Our fiscal year 2015 budget will set us on solid ground by allowing us to build back our reserves while protecting our academic quality and the services we provide to students. I anticipate fiscal year 2013 and 2014 budgets to be reconciled by November. With a sound budget in place, we'll focus on making new strategic investments and improving operations and infrastructure. We will use our resources effectively and create a higher level of accountability in pursuit of our goals.

New Union coming to life
President Smatresk with students at the Union Topping Off Ceremony
Our campus is buzzing with anticipation as we come closer to the fall 2015 opening for our new University Union. We celebrated our progress at the Union's "topping off ceremony," where I joined students, faculty and staff in tagging the highest beam lifted at the project's construction site. As an alum and friend, you'll be proud to know the new Union is being designed environmentally sustainable and will offer features for the entire UNT community.

It's all in the logistics
Logistics is one area we're focusing on for strategic growth because it's a core part of any industry. And UNT's logistics and supply chain management program recently tied for sixth place among the top 25 undergraduate supply chain programs in North America, a nod to its national prominence and well-prepared students and graduates. I know our future is bright with award-winning faculty like Ted Farris, professor of logistics, guiding us to the top.
UNT homecoming 2014
Greatest Homecoming on Earth

We're not clowning around with our Homecoming 2014 theme "Mean Green Circus, the Greatest Homecoming on Earth." Homecoming week fun kicks off Nov. 3, culminating with the Nov. 8 game against Florida Atlantic. Be the first 100 individuals to email president@unt.edu with the subject line "Circus" to win a UNT T-shirt. All entries will be entered into a random drawing for four tickets to attend the game. Include your name, address and T-shirt sizes.

Lindsey Smith: Aiming for Success
UNT astronomer croons, researches starry nights

UNT has its very own starman in Ron DiIulio, director of UNT's astronomy program. His superhero talent: Charming a crowd with his crooning and piano skills, while also serving as one of NASA's Solar System Ambassadors and a go-to expert on meteorites, the threat of light pollution in North Texas skies and protoplanets — new planets being born. Watch DiIulio perform and talk about his work on CBS News Sunday Morning.
